Thanks for checking out my #Splinterlands Battle of the Day #BOTD for your reading and watching enjoyment. All hail the #ageofthebattlemage!
What better for a BOTD weekend double feature than a #1 finish 🥇 in the Fight Pit Diamond Series Gold Foil event. The @sps.dao tournament used cards from Untamed and Rebellion this season, so let's feature this fun format in my 2nd Splinterlands Social Media Challenge of the week.
Again and always, big thanks to @fatjimmy for the proposal recommendation to have a rotating tournament format of two random card sets. The novel combinations and synergies keep the strategies fresh and engaging day after day!
Considering Untamed and Rebellion both had much smaller print runs than Chaos Legion, this event at Diamond League Gold Foil meant that many of the most extensive competitive accounts were in this event. These are the high-level battles I enjoy most since the biggest accounts bring out the best tournament players.
Battle of the Day 29
BATTLE LINK -- January 29, 2025 -- Day 29 of 365 vs. @housewifeftw
Wednesday's BOTD 29 was a low 13-mana battle with three rulesets: Super Sneak, Rise of the Commons, and High Five. The three elements available were Dragon, Death, and Water. Housewife chose the 3-mana Dragon summoner Camila for its -1 melee but didn't bother with any expensive 5+ mana Dragon cards in Rise of the Commons rule.
Instead of going for an ability from my summoner, I opted for access to both Death and Water by choosing the common dual-element Rebellion summoner, Zeddica. Both of us used mostly Water monsters, but Housewife only used three of his monster spots while I used all five available in the high Five battle.
The featured card for both of today's battles is the neutral Rebellion rare Moxian Rebel showing off its weapon training. In low-mana battles, attack power is at a premium, and Moxian Rebel goes a long way to bring a potent magic attack. With only 2-magic weapon training, its training bonus can be offset by silence, but I didn't put my opponent on playing that ability in this battle.
With Surveyor in front and Albatross behind, I got a combined 6-magic attack from three monsters for 7-mana with some incredible support abilities. Albatross adds heal at 1 mana and Surveyor is a house with magic reflection, stun, and slow. 2 damage per attack and 6 damage per round, Moxian Rebel empowered my team to take down the battle.
Kelp Initiate deserves a mention for its huge supporting role in my defense. Because I dealt all my damage from the front with magic damage, I also blanked the triage from their Kelp! Crucially the sneak attack from the rulesets overrides opportunity, so my opponent's two active melee attackers only went after my backline non-attackers. Kelp healed itself for multiple rounds and bought enough time for the magic attack to get the job done!
I only finished Round 1 with a 7-3 record, but I managed to sweep the harder Day 2 competition with a 6-0 record to battle my way to the top. To get there, I had to avenge my Round 1 loss against Lorkus and Moxian Rebel came along to do the business again.
Battle of the Day 30
BATTLE LINK -- January 30, 2025 -- Day 30 of 365 vs. @lorkus
The battle from Day 2 of the tournament had 42-mana and three rulesets: Rise of the Commons, Noxious Fumes, and Equal Opportunity. Two elements were excluded: Fire and Water. With Life and Earth both available in a juicy mid-mana battle, it was no surprise to see both of us using Eternal Tofu as summoner.
I also fully expected to see Grimbardun Smith, since it is one of the most powerful rares in this tournament format and its immunity is ideal in Noxious Fumes. Of course, Grim Smith was an auto-include on my own team as well. Meriput Magician was another monster we both chose for its tank heal support, but only Lorkus went with Meriput Mossmender as well.
Mossmender just didn't seem like a great inclusion for a few reasons: 1) it has the lowest health so it is his first target on attack, 2) Grim Smith already has immunity so its cleanse ability to clear poison is not helping, 3) it has only a 2-power attack for 6 mana.
Comparatively, I had a much more powerful attack than my opponent, 14 - 9, even though it was split between 8 at Grim Smith and 6 at the opportunity target. All six of the opportunity attack came from the weapon training of Moxian Rebel. Not only did my Grim Smith have an attack while Lorkus's did not, but I also included Albahoo Forester for another 2 magic attack that brought along a second triage ability to complement Tofu's tactic.
I was up on attack power and I was up on heal effects with an extra triage. Although the balance of the battle looks a bit uneven, it did ultimately go to fatigue rounds as one can see from the battle screen capture. His Grim Smith did a great job absorbing all that damage coming from my front two positions since it had repair and got healed by the Magician.
But his Grim Smith didn't have an attack and mine did. Moxian Rebel giving my Grim Smith a 2-powered attack on its immunity shell made the difference as I eventually whittled away at his frontline that could not be healed by triage. These Tofu mirrors are always a challenge because one wrong placement or monster choice can cost you the battle. Glad I was able to com out on top and sweep Day 2 to take down the tournament in 1st place.
