BATTLE LINK -- January 4, 2025 -- Day 4 of 365 vs. @samwiseg
Today's BOTD is from Day 2 action of the Scarred Hand Gold Cup Gold Foil tournament by the SPSDAO. In the Rebellion-only GF event, I went 9-1 on the first day and only needed to win three of the six battles on Day 2 to lock up a Top 4 finish. This was the most compelling of my three wins which helped me finish 10-4, alone in third place.
The 39-mana battle had three rulesets: Counterspell, Explosive Weaponry, and Aimless. With Dragon as the only excluded element, there was a lot of room for myriad strategies using the dual-element legendary summoners. My opponent went for the tried-and-true Eternal Tofu for its powerful thorns ability and triage tactic. I went in a totally different direction with Drath Risquel and a beefy range lineup.
The featured card of the battle is the Rebellion rare promo card, Night Stalker. Although the battle was fought in Gold League, the battle rules gave Night Stalker the familiar blast ability that he has at max level. Granted Night Stalked is inherently weak to Tofu's thorns and died after two attacks, but he still managed to take out three of my opponent's monsters in Round 1!
It was clever of my opponent to leverage the new shroud ability from Fizbo to provide reflection shield to two of his monsters in the blast battle, including his all-important Venka. Lucky for me, I hit the jackpot when I blind-named Venka in fourth position with the taunt tactic from Drath.
That meant Venka was the target of the sneak attack from Night Stalker, striking at the heart of my opponent's lineup. With the blast attack, the sneak attack into fourth position did a ton of damage and took out the fragile Fizbo.
After Night Stalker suicided himself into the thorns of the opponent's backline, the powerful range attackers I placed behind him did the rest of the work. I think Rush Townsend is an excellent play in blast battles since its powerful ambush attack can deal heavy damage before the opponent gets up to speed.
The Rebellion soulbound reward epic Kha'zi Conjuror is also a smart play in blast battles that typically end quickly before its debilitation becomes too much of a drawback. The piercing ability on Rush and Conjuror make them that much more effective in aggressive blast conditions.
I was surprised that my opponent played two magic monsters without reflection shield in the counterspell battle, especially the tank healer at the back. Sure, the shield ability is nice to have as sneak insurance, but tank heal is far from its best in the scattershot battle. My opponent may have been better served trying to figure out how to work a second triage monster into his lineup. Better luck next time...

Wow you really went for the blind taunt call, that's gutsy, I expected it to be on your tank since you also gave him shield! Nice to see the squirrel perform well.
9 times out of 10, I'm using the taunt ability on one of their monsters. Earth already has Slipspawn and based on the way Fire plays, I don't often use a taunt for my Fire teams at all. But using taunt on their team allows you to take out their most important monster (when playing live in ranked) or, in the case of this battle, taunt a monster in the middle of the opponent's lineup to deal more blast damage.
Brilliant post! 🌈
Thanks mate. I'm trying to do one of these every day in 2025, so follow along and stay tuned!
