BATTLE LINK -- January 6, 2025 -- Day 6 of 365 vs. @luckyghreat88
There were some big bags of SPS on the line for today's BOTD during Day 2 of the Mount Mox Modern Diamond Invitational Gold Foil event. I came into Day 2 action with two losses so I would need a nearly flawless performance to have a shot at the top prize for Top 4.
The 31-mana battle had three rulesets: Reverse Speed, Healed Out, and Going the Distance. There were also only three elements available: Fire, Water, and Death. We both chose Water and a few of the same monsters, too.
The new Rebellion reward common Mar Toren Trader is great for range-only battles with its headwinds ability for only 3 mana. Without healing allowed, repair makes a huge difference, so Swamp Spitter is another important inclusion. Interestingly, we chose different summoners, with my opponent choosing Kelya for her speed and additional armor.
I decided to try something a bit different with today's featured card, the rare Rebellion summoner, Prophet Rosa. Instead of opting for the aggressive tactic that gives +2 range to two monsters, I chose for the defensive tactic to give shield to one monster.
I based my entire strategy around using Wave Brood, with its taunt and return fire, to deal reflect damage to my opponent's monsters. I boosted that damage by also adding Sea Stalker for its amplify ability. But without healing as an option, giving the high-health Wave Brood shield plus a repair from Spitter was nearly as good.
The plan worked exactly as expected! With my opponent's team down by one range attack from the Trader and Wave Brook getting shield from Rosa, it was very difficult for my opponent to get it off the battlefield.
In fact, they never succeeded at getting Wave Brood off the battlefield. It excelled as a tank in this range-only, reverse speed battle! Combines with amplify, it was a real threat to my opponent's lineup when it could connect on an attack. On top of its sturdy defenses, Brood's 1 speed is nore added elusiveness in this reverse speed battle. Honestly, I was a bit surprised this strategy worked so well, but the more you know. Better luck next time!
