Huge Pack Airdrop to Splinterlands & Hive Stakeholders

in Splinterlandslast month (edited)

post_airdrop.png

Greetings,

We’re thrilled to announce that we’re giving away over $20,000 worth of Ethgard Legends Alpha Packs to Hive and Splinterlands stakeholders!

Backstory

When we started building the game over a year ago, we had the best intentions in mind. Using Hive as our technological platform and fully embracing Splinterlands, we initially released an early version under the "Splinter Royale" branding.

Later, when we rebranded to Ethgard Legends and shifted to EVM-compatible technologies, aligning with our vision of becoming a fully onchain game built with smart contracts, we still felt a strong connection to both the Hive and Splinterlands communities.

In fact, we use Hive as our primary long-form blogging platform and continue to follow its technical progress closely. We're also keeping a close eye on Splinterlands' development and remain hopeful for future collaboration opportunities between Splinterlands and Ethgard Legends.

Alpha Pack Airdrop to Stakeholders

To show our gratitude to both communities, we’re airdropping a small Christmas gift:

An Alpha Pack for Hive stakeholders with at least 1,000 Hive Power who have been active within 2024, or Splinterlands stakeholders with at least 10,000 SPS who participated in Governance voting within 2024.

If you're unsure whether you're eligible, we'll be sending out notification transfers shortly.

How to Mint Your Free Pack

  1. Sign In to Ethgard Legends using your Hive account.
  2. Go to the Settings page to connect an EVM address. We recommend either Metamask, Coinbase Wallet or Brave Wallet.
  3. Head over to your Inventory and mint your pack onchain.
  4. (Optional) Get a few lucky potions for extra luck.
  5. Open it and take the cards for a spin in the arena. (Check out our Tutorial to get quickly familiar with the game)

Onchain Transactions Gas Fees

Minting your pack requires an onchain transaction, which can be paid for in CREDITS or ETH. No reason to worry here, as transactions on Base and B3 are very cheap—on B3, they’re practically near-gasless (less than $0.001).

  1. Paying with ETH: Ensure you have sufficient ETH in your wallet on B3 by bridging from Base: https://bridge.b3.fun. We recommend at least $1 worth of ETH, which should cover gas fees for a long time.

  2. Paying with CREDITS: CREDITS can be purchased using various tokens, including HIVE, SPS, DEC, and more.

Share Your Openings

We’re curious to see what you’ll pull from your packs! Maybe some gold foils or even a diamond foil? Feel free to share your openings with us in this post.

Thank you for being part of our journey. We can’t wait to see you in the arena!

Too bad outside of HIVE, and too bad you have to pay to get your airdrop, I don't like games on coinbase or anything else, but thank you all the same, so I wouldn't open the pack (free) which you have to pay for

Hey @hive-103505, no problem! It’s totally understandable that new things can bring a bit of uncertainty. But if you change your mind, the pack will still be there for you to claim! 🙂

PS: You can play the game for free if you’d like to check it out. It’s a lot of fun!

how long will it be claimable?

@woelfchen there's no time window on claiming. As long as you at least login/sign up into the website.

with an airdrop that makes people poorer.Sounds like a shitty airdrop that I need to pay eth to get and not be able to sell since there's no market. Only a parasite like @therealwolf could come up

Self upvoted for visibility, will remove vote later before payout.

no removal of self vote?

on topic: I agree. it looks like it.
No time rn to pay to get an airdrop xD

I took it out, I forgot lol

Too convoluted so not gonna bother.

Not only do I have to interact with a chain I don't care for and also have to pay fees but I have to move funds on to some other chain/bridge as well. Naaa..

Hey @shmoogleosukami, no problem! You probably already know this, but B3 is an L3 on Base with very low gas fees. Most recently, Parallel announced they'd be launching their upcoming game on B3 (https://decrypt.co/250208/parallel-nft-game-maker-reveals-project-tau-ceti-3d-shooter). So it might be interesting to have some ETH on B3 nevertheless. Anyway, the pack is there for you to claim if you change your mind 🙂

not hive related
not my business

I don't know the game, but I guess I can give it a try to see what it's all about.

The three cards that came out of the pack seem to be common types, but I guess I'll know better when I play some games.

Hmm. Having a hard time finding the Pack "minted", but I don't think I did since I don't have any Credits.
Also, I opened a chests with crowns in it, but they don't show up in the right corner xD

Hey @cwow2

Hmm. Having a hard time finding the Pack "minted", but I don't think I did since I don't have any Credits.

We've rephrases the dialog sentence now. Guessing you've expected it to be minted on clicking on it. To mint, you'll need 1 CREDITS or enough ETH on B3. Please refer to the post on more details.

Also, I opened a chests with crowns in it, but they don't show up in the right corner xD

Refreshing the page should show them. We'll implement an update after opening chests as well.

Edit: Make sure you'll connect an EVM address in your Settings. For example, via Metamask, Coinbase Wallet or Brave Wallet.

image.png

Ohh man, thought I could do it all through Hive :p

Of course you can't. Therealwolf is only hear to leech friend

Thats why you downvoted it, I was wondering :D

a login with Hive always leads to an “Error”.hi @ethgardlegends

Hey @ogfox, please try again. Should be working now!

Can I also be part of the airdrop, even though I have actually bought some Alpha packs and already play the game :D

I have over 1k HP and over 10K SPS staked (and I'm taking part in voting).

I got my Metamask wallet connected also.

Could really use some extra packs 😅

Hey @tsnaks, you're already on the airdrop list. Sign in again and you should see the pack!

Oh right, Just had to log out and sign back in :)

Thanks for the airdrop!

Are you sure this pages is safe ??? @tsnaks

I played Splinterroyale a long time ago, they just rebranded to Ethgard legends.

I mean I can't be sure 100% if it's safe or not, but I've seen them develop the game and I quite like it.

It's a big shame though that they didn't like HIVE Blockchain and are moving the project more towards other chains, but through the credit system, HIVE users can still interact.

And how to you get this .... are they going to ask me to loge in what my keys on some pages ??

I just use Hive keychain to log in.

Hey @foxkoit, you can just use Hive Keychain to sign into the game. This works like any other Hive sign in works - Splinterlands, Hive Engine, Peakd, Hive.Blog, etc.

WHat is that ???

How does the Login with Hive Account work? No Keychain App or anything available…

Hey @borsengelaber, you should be able to see Hive Keychain. Make sure the extension is allowed to access the page. If it's still not there, please let us know.

image.png

No on my iPhone it Looks like this:

Ah, yes. To sign in on mobile with keychain, you'll need to use the Keychain app and the app-browser. But then you'll might run into an issue where Metamask on mobile doesn't work. So, it would be easiest for now, if you'd sign in on Desktop. Hope this works for you!

Hey @fashtioluwa, are you opening the site on Desktop or Mobile? And which browser are you using?

I use desktop and i use chrome

Why do you call this "free pack", if the players have to pay for it (even if a very small amount)?

That’s a great question, and we completely understand how it might feel confusing. The pack itself is indeed free — we’re not charging for the item itself — but since it’s onchain, there’s a small blockchain fee involved to mint it. This ensures the assets remain decentralized, tradeable, and securely yours forever.

We’re committed to making Ethgard Legends an authentic Web3 experience where you truly own your assets. To keep this commitment, minting, pack opening and gameplay rewards are onchain, which inherently comes with minor transaction costs. However, we’ve worked hard to ensure these fees are minimal, with transactions on B3 costing less than $0.001 in most cases.

We hope this clears up any confusion! If you have further questions or feedback, let us know!

There are no transaction fees on the Hive blockchain.

Players still actually own Splinterlands cards, which are NFTs (on the second layer).

Every card has its own ID.

Better to use a blockchain, where there are no transaction fees.

Hey @xplosive, those are valid points. Let us clarify a few things.

Splinterlands uses a database to store cards with unique IDs that sync with the blockchain for transactions. But the cards themselves aren’t fully onchain. If their database were to go offline for whatever reason, access to your cards and their history would be affected. They’re working on addressing this with the upcoming validator nodes, but it’s still a work in progress and won’t include cards in its initial version.

At Ethgard Legends, we’ve taken a different approach by making all game assets fully onchain from the start. That means your cards, packs, and other assets are securely stored on the blockchain, and you can trade them directly on platforms like OpenSea and others. Even if our servers went offline tomorrow, your assets would remain entirely under your control.

Now, about transaction fees — we totally get it, they’re not ideal. But they’re a part of most blockchain ecosystems, whether it’s Ethereum, Solana, Avalanche or others. We’ve worked to keep these costs as low as possible. On B3, they’re practically near-gasless, often costing less than $0.001 per transaction. It’s a small tradeoff for the security and ownership benefits of having fully onchain assets.

Both approaches have their pros and cons, and we have a lot of respect for the Splinterlands team and the work they’re doing.

as we are talking about it, and you build a game on it you probably know. just few days ago i got to look into the Base network, i must say i am pretty stupid on how what works. but what i managed to find is that at the moment base network is managed by Coinbase. and more or less it looks like a database Coinbase created to batch data before it writes it to Ethereum. Makes sense, but it looks like coinbase is the only one running the infrastructure.

And B3 is another layer above it. as i managed to find a bit of data something about Coinbase employees or ex employees making it, and nothing how it works and who is running the infrastructure, I would assume it is another database above the database.

Is there a way for you or me to run nodes for Base or B3?

i must say i have no idea what Splinterlands is writing to Hive but i would assume that ID of the card i own is written to Hive and connected to my username. You are saying you can't recreate the card from transactions written on Hive.

I would assume B3 writes the transaction, batches it with all the other transactions, writes it to Base, Base batches it with all the other transactions on their database and writes it to Ethereum.

What is the difference?

Those are some deep questions. Let me try to explain.

Base uses optimistic rollups, settling on Ethereum. (it's writing the final transactions to Ethereum)

Optimistic rollups are layer 2 (L2) protocols designed to extend the throughput of Ethereum's base layer. They reduce computation on the main Ethereum chain by processing transactions off-chain, offering significant improvements in processing speeds. Unlike other scaling solutions, such as sidechains, optimistic rollups derive security from Mainnet by publishing transaction results on-chain, or plasma chains, which also verify transactions on Ethereum with fraud proofs, but store transaction data elsewhere.

B3 also uses optimistic rollups, but settling on Base. It's also using something called, https://celenium.io/rollup/b3, which is an infrastructure provider for rollups. So you're not able to run a witness node as you'd be able to run one on Hive.

Now, neither B3 or Base are using databases in the traditional sense. Assets don't just exist somewhere in a database, they're simply stored as transaction logs and apps wanting to use that data, need to index the transactions and then create their own databases out of them, i.e. https://ponder.sh. Due to smart contracts aka. logic being onchain, all of the transactions can be used to reconstruct the assets.

It works similarly on Hive, just with the difference that the logic for custom jsons is NOT onchain. For example, if you open a pack in Splinterlands, that opening is processed offchain and then stored within Splinterlands' database. You could broadcast 5x the pack opening, but if in the end only 1 gets processed, simply alone from the blockchain transactions, you wouldn't know which got processed and which didn't.

Thanks.

One thing i understand even less now is, i made a transaction on B3, i opened a pack. it needs to be stored somewhere on B3 network before it is written to Base, because it needs to be batched with all other transactions. The same needs to happen on Base before it goes to Ethereum. There needs to be some kind of infrastructure running for that to happen. There are no classics decentralized nodes responsible for that, so is Coinbase running it?
I assume it must be recorded somewhere as you can't batch stuff in real time :)

ignore the terminology, i probably missed half of how things should be called.

Allow me to pay in hive on the hive chain and I'm there.

Just as a bit of constructive criticism, I was able to sign in via Keychain, but then the first message I saw was that I need to connect an EVM address.

I hadn't come across that term before and had to Google it. I'd suggest it's good practice that if the first thing a potential player sees is an acronym, you should add the full name in brackets or something, and ideally a brief explanation, rather than just assuming it's something everyone is familiar with (crypto is a complex space, so not everyone will be familiar with every term).

But as others have said, having to pay for an airdrop even if it's only a small amount isn't a great first impression. Trying to pitch it as a Hive game when as far as I can see the only Hive connection is the ability to log in with our Hive user credentials is also a bit questionable.

It might be better to be clear that it's a game run by a centralised business using a Web3 platform but where you can log in using your Hive ID.

Hey, thanks for the feedback. The comment about the abbreviation comment is noted and valuable to know!

Ethgard Legends has not been pitched as a Hive game. Not sure where you got that from.

Thanks - I think I just assumed it was a Hive game from the way the marketing was being done. I don't think I've seen Keychain used outside Hive before, but now I think about it. that's actually a neat way to raise awareness of Hive with non-Hivers if it's accompanied with the right messaging.

so here is the xp. i actually wanted to try to use Base, B3. I finally found an old metamask wallet, and somehow i had 22$ in it. It is 4 years old so it was probably nothing then. I connected the metamask and clicked to pay ETH. I learned i need to use a bride to swap Base eth to B3 eth (or something like that). But then i learned i need to Swap Eth to Base Eth. And it asked for 7$ of fees. And by the times shown, probably over 15 minutes to do all of that.

So i gave up and decided to use hive.

15 seconds later i got credits. (15 seconds because i actually looked what keychain wrote about transaction).

I clicked claim.

15 minutes later it is still Broadcasting request to B3 to mint.

Hey @bil.prag, I understand the issues you mentioned. If you withdraw from an exchange directly to Base, the transaction fees would be very slim. So I'd prefer that option rather than having to bridge manually from Ethereum.

Regarding the broadcasting, sometimes the notifications aren't received by the website. So it's broadcasted, website just doesn't know. Should be fixed soon.

i don't have ETH (could not justify using it when transactions were half of an average monthly pay in my country, so never got into buying it) so i can't test it out, but from what i seen i can't get ETH from Binance to Base directly.
So it is kinda depending on where do you have access. Coinbase does not like me. So if you have access to Binance it is much faster and cheaper to go the Hive root. If you use Coinbase, maybe it is Base.

edit:

Just noticed you can't make small transactions. Like buying 1 potion, even if you just need one. I assume that is a limitation of fees on B3/Base.

image.png

You can withdraw to from Binance to Base. Network fee was about $0.10, but Base was mentioned as "congested". For simple payments, it's best to use the cheapest transaction fee as possible, for Hive that'd be gasless.

Regarding the minimum purchase amount: let me look into that. It should be possible to purchase 1 at a time, so I might need to fix that.

Diggin' all the updates! Hadn't signed in for a while, looks good 🙌

I liked the idea. Thanks for pinging my account. Here's the catch:

  1. I would have loved to know how many Credits were needed. Yet I went with the default of 1,000. If this does not work that is Hive wasted.
  2. Now it says it is broadcasting the request to mind for +2 hours already (see pic) and it is wasting my precious time and patience.

So tell me something that pleases my experience.

Ok, looks like I already could hide the alert window. And now I know that it needed 1 Credit, leaving me with 999 and 1050 being needed for seven lucky potions. 2 more Credits for claiming the potion purchase and opening the pack.

If you came here for taking the airdrop, consider buying 1053 Credits, because 1000 is the minimum purchase and you can not buy three potions, but minimum for 1000 Credits. 150 per potion making it 1050 Credits + 3 for making transactions without ETH on the B3 EVM.

Here is my loot from the airdrop:

Hey @anjanida, apology for the delay. We're working on a fix to solve the "waiting" issue. Congrats on the pack opening!

Is B3 anL-2? Does it use OP stack or is part of the Optimism Superchain?

Hey @xyzashu, B3 is an L3 on Base (L2). It uses https://celestia.org/ under-the-hood.

Okay, so the game does not even run on Hive?

Hey @woelfchen, what exactly do you mean with "running on Hive"?

claiming item is taking a long it seems? @therealwolf - trying on music-community account and this status is ongoing since ages

image.png

First time hearing about this one. The HIVE transfer with message is what alerted me.

I’m having an issue on mobile. Logged in using Keychain mobile, zero issues. Used sign in code to login on MetaMask mobile, again zero issues. Once I try to connect my EVM address using MetaMask mobile, the Connect Wallet “MetaMask” function does nothing when I select it. I’ll attach a screenshot of where I’m currently stuck if that helps.

IMG_8835.jpeg

Hey @daltono, are you able to use MetaMask on Desktop? We'll need to troubleshoot why it's not working on mobile and this might take a bit. We'll let you know however once we've looked into it.

Yes I can use the desktop version once I’m back home, but figured you may want to know about the issues with mobile.

I need to pay few in eth? Did I get it correct?

Hey @alokkumar121, you'll need enough ETH for the minting of the pack, which costs ~0.0008$. Bridging 1$ of ETH from Base to B3 (https://bridge.b3.fun/) should be enough for a lot of transactions. 🙂

Alternatively, you can also use CREDITS, 1 CREDITS per transaction. Minimum purchase amount of CREDITS are 1000, so 1$.
