In my experience, opening booster packs from Splinterlands is not so reliant on luck. Market prices are quite accurate most of the time, unless it's something that just released. So if you buy a bunch of packs, you'll seldomly lose more than 10%. Whatever I get usually evens out - which happened to be the case with my 102 chaos legion packs.
I got very unlucky with gold foils. No summoner gold foils, yet again no legendary gold foils, but that's kind of taken for granted I guess, and generally lots of regular common cards. More than I usually get. STILL! I got pretty much the exact value I invested. Yes, let me explain.
As soon as I was done opening (using double potions, of course), peakmonsters told me the total value of my cards. Considering I'm selling them for 1% less than market prices and that I'm losing 5% as market fees... It came down to the exact same USD value I paid for! Down to the dollar! Haha.
I didn't sell all of them, though, but most are gone. Right now, I'm delegating a few cards to a friend who's playing and splitting the money with me. He has pretty much nothing except my cards, but he's having fun, because Splinterlands is a fun game. After telling him about Axie and Splinterlands, I suggested he'd have more fun with Splinterlands, which he agreed. He's been playing for over a month, craving for more.
In the image at the beginning of this post, you can see the cards I've delegated to him. Oh, I'm sure you thought for a moment those were the entirety of my booster pack drops, but nope. Posts look better with an image at the beginning, you know!

I'm resisting to open all mine, since I want to take advantage of the future airdrops and increase my chances of getting the cards. But did open a few, and for sure the dollar amount was bigger than the packs value.
The way I see it, you make more money using/renting the cards before the airdrops so you can buy more packs, instead of waiting with idle assets. It's also my personal experience.
I didn't accumulate any vouchers for the pre-sale but I am looking forward to cracking a few packs in general sale.
I did already buy up quite a few Chaos Legions cards, but I am glad you were able to get pretty much the same value you put in even with people quick flipping on launch!😃

Being a Splinterlands player, I was so happy to open two of my packs. I only purchased 11. I received two Rares, nothing spectacular. I did receive a nice boost to my Deck power, and air drop points :-)
I find that opening a whole bunch tends to even out, while opening a few always makes me lose money. Personal experience only. Also, never open packs without potions!
Great advice, I was just figuring out how many potions I needed to open the rest of my packs as far as HBD for credits. Then I read your reply and laughed out loud at how things just seemed to come together. 😉
imo you don't buy potions, you farm them from chests
Yes normally however at my level you get 1 chest per quest completion and it is not always a potion so I bought potions to increase my Deck Power and it worked now I just need to play better lol 😂
silver 3 is certainly the bare minimum to start getting returns. how far are you from this? I'm at 17,545 right now
I am far from you at 1,370. Will buy more chaos legion packs that may give me a bit of a boost.
Breaking even is a win in my book.
