Twitch Plays Splinterlands (TPS) Report

in Splinterlands27 days ago (edited)

I have a fun idea for a Splinterlands project. I call it TwitchPlaysSplinterlands (TPS). We need to talk about our TPS reports.

TwitchPlaysSplinterlands (TPS) is an old project from 2021. After chatting with @dejota about it, I decided to revive it. The idea is to let Twitch stream chat interact with the Splinterlands game and fight battles. Think of it like a communal activity.

I played Splinterlands when battles were first introduced in 2018. Lately, I have been inactive and feeling overwhelmed by the newer card sets and the recently added rules. I want to get back into the game but never find the time to do so. TPS seems like an excellent opportunity to jump back into Splinterlands and create something fun and beneficial to the Splinterlands ecosystem.

What Didn't Work in 2021 TPS

When we soft-launched TPS in 2021, I don't think we did enough to push things forward.

  • Only one player at a time could battle at once. Players in chat had to take turns, so there was a lot of friction.
  • There was not enough promotion, and I didn't talk about this project enough.
  • TPS code wasn't developed to its potential. There is a lot more that could be added to it.

What's the current status of TPS?

I'm re-committed to this project. I bought a new spellbook for @TwitchSplinter. The account has no cards right now. The Twitch channel is set up but not yet streaming. Check it out and subscribe to

. We also have a Discord channel to discuss the project.

Some testing is happening occasionally, but I haven't set a streaming schedule to get this going. I want to start with a consistent schedule so that I can be present monitor the stream and fix any issues that arise.

Potential for Visibility and Onboarding

If this works out, the Twitch channel will let anyone participate and play Splinterlands without requiring a spell book or a Hive account. This means 0 friction for seeing and trying the game. Just type in a chat box! Talk to the other TPS'ers and learn their strategies.

There could also be an opportunity to onboard some new players who pop into the stream. Want to share rewards or start playing for yourself? Make and register a Hive account!

Components of the System

Twitch chatbot: There's a chatbot that watches for instructions and relays them to the TPS core. The chatbot also relays messages to Discord.

The chatbot also has some simple commands for asking for info. For example, it can link to the TPS Splinter player profile/deck, to Discord, where the group hangs out, and to where to get a Splinterlands spellbook, etc.

TPS core—I don't want to reveal too many details about this part. It acts upon instructions from the chat relay and interacts with the game. It should also have a database to keep a history of what happened and who participated.

Next Steps

Voting System

A voting system is needed to make it run more smoothly. Players in the chat will have to vote on which cards to play. If well-built, the voting system will allow many players to participate simultaneously instead of taking turns. The voting will have to happen quickly in rounds. First, choose a summoner. Second, choose the remaining cards. Third, start the battle.

Rewards sharing

A rewards-sharing mechanism is needed to get people really engaged. What will happen to the rewards if TwitchSplinter does well during the season or in tournaments?

Participants could register their Hive accounts if they want some of the rewards. The system could even factor in win/loss stats when calculating the rewards distribution.

What if someone plays in Twitch chat but doesn't yet have a Hive account? We can help with that, too, and direct them to an onboarding portal like HiveInvite.com.

Other Splinterlands game features

Lots of other areas to explore:

  • Accepting duels
  • crowd-controlled renting
  • tournament matches
  • reward claiming
  • land management?

That's it for now. I will share updates and more ideas in future posts. More great things to come!

  • 10% of rewards to directed to CommentRewarder to help reward replies. Let me know what you think about TPS! Will Twitch move swiftly to ban us?

What an awesome project! It sounds like a super creative way to engage both veteran and new players in Splinterlands.

The idea of playing collaboratively in Twitch chat with a voting system will create a unique and fun experience for everyone.

This is a very cool idea! Happy to help where I can and looking forward to seeing how this thing pans out. Thanks for putting this out there!

So glad you decided to move forward with the idea. I think it has the potential to do well and if nothing else be a fun experiment for you and the community.

I’m excited to get it up and running. We’ll see what happens!

I'm not a player, but it seems like a good project, I wish you much success.

Thanks! You should try Splinterlands!

I find it interesting, maybe I'll give it a try, I'll investigate thoroughly to see what it's about.
