Retaliate is one of those abilities which has the possibility to change the outcome of a battle. Whilst it can be luck whether the ability goes off right, it can be battle defining.
Just recently I levelled up one of my Epic cards to third level to take advantage of The forgotten One's Retaliate ability.
The ability allows you to strike back at the opponent. As Forgotten One is sat in the second position of my lineup, it does not get to attack until quite late in the battle but when it does, it changes the outcome quite significantly. Having the additional attack really does make a difference.

The Ferox Defender is has received the benefit of the Martyr ability from the Firecaller and the Venari Marksrat and has the added bonus of Tarsa's additional melee damage - a formidable opponent to say the least.
In those final moments we see the Forgotten One is stripped of all armour by a melee attack and it is at that moment the Retaliate ability kicks in. The following round is very similar with a battle going right down to the wire. The real benefit is the potential second attack taking Forgotten One's damage into double figures if the ability and the attack are both successful.
Whats better than hitting hard? Hitting twice!
In this example the Double Strike of the Coastal Sentry is very formidable strategy with it tucked behind the Baakjira. But with the Blast ruleset as well, the damage dealt by the Retaliate is multiplied given the position of the aggressor (Coastal Sentry).

What could have been a very tricky encounter was resolved by a single monster dealing massive damage to a critical target with the Retaliate ability .For me, this upgrade to third level was well worth the investment.
