Hello everyone I am back from a bit of an absence with my latest drawing for the Splinterlands Art Contest !
This time I chose to go for my take on an older card - the Crystal Werewolf.
My vision for the piece was to go for a head only front view to challenge myself a bit and go for a bit more detail, since I never really drew fur so don't be too hard on me, but constructive criticism is always welcome, as usual.
Here is the initial sketch, I am going on an A4 paper:
I was fairly happy with the overall composition so I proceeded to laying some light undertones:
I skipped adding any color to the fur at this point to try and add as many different colors later on one by one to give it some depth. I am not sure if that was the correct way to go or I should have gone part by part and fleshing it all out a little bit at a time but decided against it, because I figured it would be more difficult to make it all coherent at the end. Mostly because I usually spread my drawings over several days and would be hard to reproduce exactly the same strokes, color, shading, etc.
Time to add some detail and I started with the front fangs and the "face" as a whole.
Here is where I started experimenting to see how to go about the fur by starting on the forehead and a little bit here and there just to get a feel of how to do it. As I told you this is the first time drawing fur for me and I looked up some wolf photos as reference, just to see how the fur clumps up, how it flows, what are the color variations and such. I debated going in and adding some browns but decided against it to stick to the grey theme, all I added differently is just a pinch of blue here and there to bring it all together.
And here is the final result, I am fairly happy with it and I hope you guys like it too.
I learned a lot during this drawing, mostly that fur is hard to draw but it is a nice challenge to try it out
I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did drawing it, To everyone that takes the time to check out my post I wish a great day/night and till the next post!
