Anyone that already completed at least one season on Splinterlands knows about the race to rent power before the season ends. It is a challenge balancing the likely gain on Season Rewards and the amount spent on card rentals to finish the season on Silver III.
To decrease the amount spent on card rentals, many bronze players choose to wait until there are only two or three days to the end of the season and only then will seek the amount of power needed to advance through the leagues.
I believe some people are exploiting this end-of-season race and are gaining "free" DEC on card rentals. They are canceling the rental contract after the 24 hours card lock period.
Thus, despite the refund of the rest of the money locked in Escrow to the renter, the person who makes the card available for rent received DEC relating to one day rent without the card having fulfilled its role for the person who rented it.
Whoever rents only to have enough power to finish the season in the Silver League III pays one day's rent for nothing.
I've watched this take place in my last three seasons. In all of them, I had the rental contract canceled after the 24 hours card lock period.
Rent for 3 days: 177.45 DEC
Rent canceled after 24 hours.
Refund: 118.3 DEC
Amount spent: 59.15 DEC
Rent for 3 days: 73.215 DEC
Rent canceled after 24 hours.
Return for cancellation: 48.81 DEC
Amount spent: 24.405 DEC
A total of 83.6 DEC was spent without the goal being met. One could argue that the card was available to me for 24 hours. That is true. However, the benefit obtained from its use during this time is not sufficient to cover the amount spent, and it is not the objective that the rental was intended to fulfill.
Maybe this isn't the best way to rent power and advance to Silver III league, but I see it's still what most players do. And, if the contract is broken after just 24 hours, its purpose is compromised.
A minimum time of more than one day for card rental could inhibit this practice and make the process fairer. What do you think? Has this happened to you?

I think 24 hours is fair. What you could do as a renter is to just wait until there is less than 24 hours left until season ends.
A function that would need to be entered in order to thwart this would be some kind of pre-selected option where the person renting out the card picks a lock-up period that is longer than 24 hours.
I did that one time but took me a couple hours to rent all cards. It's hard to finish the transactions when bots are taking the rental market.
I think your suggestion can be good. But a maximum lockdown period is necessary.
