What Would The New Chaos Legion - Less Modern Format Look Like?
With Chaos Legion out of the Modern Format by April 2025, let us take a look at the Rebellion Cards and what changes will it bring to battles. We will also speculate on the new core set - Conclave Arcana. What new abilities CA will bring? Will it bring out new mechanics? Lezgow!
Rebellion Set
I know most of us are used to Chaos Legion right now. As a matter of fact, almost 90% of cards used in battles are Chaos Legion. And I am not just talking about Modern. Even in Wild, the go-to cards are still Chaos Legion Core cards like DiemonShark, Kelya, Immortalis, Astral Entity etc. We only seldom see the usage of Rebellion Cards. To familiarize ourselves with the cards that are NOT-Chaos Legion, let's revisit the Rebellion Core Cards. Let's start with Earth splinters
Earth Splinters
It is interesting to note that Rebellion Set utilized the new mechanic Dual Element Cards and Summoners. That's why before we dive to Earth splinters, please do remember that we can pair elements together now. For example, when we use the Chuul Jujinchi summoner we can use Life and Earth monsters in the battle. Another feature of Rebellion Set is the introduction of Summoner Tactics. Summoner Tactics allows players to choose the boost they will apply to certain monsters. For example Underboss Fabino can bestow +2 Melee Attack to 2 monsters or Poison Ability to 1 monster. The choice is yours.
Earth Rebellion cards are noticeably no longer Magic-centric. Opposite of their Chaos Legion counterpart. Earth splinter is now Anti-Melee Heavy headed by Eternal Tofu - the most OP Summoner to date. Eternal Tofu boasts amazing boosts to the team - +2 Health, Snare and Thorns. Aside from Tofu, notable Earth cards are Zebajin having the ability Armored Strike and Last Stand, Lord Thanalor a magic card with Amplify, Scavenge and Rust and Lurking Puffer a non-attack card that has Silence, Corrosive Ward and Poison. The latter can be paired with Weapons Training cards for its Poison to take effect. Lioceros is a good tank even without Tofu because of its Thorns and Trample ability. Zebajin reminds me of Kron the Undying of the Untamed Set. It is a good backline unit that attacks using its Armor and when it's the only left, it is powered up by Last Stand.
Fire Splinters
Fire Rebellion cards are arguably Ambush experts and Ranged-savy cards. Gobalano Soldier is the decent Ambush monster with Shatter and Sneak. No backline enemy unit is safe against Gobalano. Torch Vizier is a beautiful Opportunity Card that doesn't take damage from indirect hits. Fire Rebellion has in it's ranks one of the best tanks of Rebellion - Chaos Golem. This card reminds me of the Retaliate mechanic of Diemonshark. It can take damage but returns Ranged attack back.
Because of Risqruel Drath, Fire splinters enjoy the Earthquake phenomenon with +1 Ranged Attack and Flying Ability bestowments. From now on, when you need some Flying action (like in EQ ruleset), Fire splinters are your goto-cards. And by the way, Risqruel can summon Earth monsters too.
Death Splinter
When it comes to back-handed tactics, there is no stopping Death Rebellion Splinters. Even though they are no longer the Anti-Magic card set contrary to their predecessor, Death is now more diverse and balanced. From the Redemption ability of Chaos Animator to OP abilities of Wailing Wraith (Armor Strike, Reach, Affliction and Rust), you will surely love what Death splinters bring to the battle. Chaos Jailer is another card that you should look out for with Opportunity, Poison, Slow and Ambush abilities. This card has surely taken me by surprise by double-poisoning my unit during the Ambush and Round 1 phases. If you are looking for a Eternal Tofu counter, you can try Reklah that can bestow Reflection Shield to two monsters.
Death Splinters can spam magic attacks or Trample enemies with Lorkus as the summoner. This summoner can also counter decks that heavily depend on Heals because of Affliction and Scavenge tactics.
Water Splinter
Let us not forget the Water Rebellion cards. From being the Trample expert, Water has now become the Armored and Defensive type. Prophet Rosa is the Rare Summoner you should be aware of. She is useful in Going The Distance Ruleset because of the Ranged Attack it bestows. Kinda remind me of General Sloan of CL Life Summoners. Daarg DeadBlast is a very useful card due to its Weapons Training ability, accompanied by Triage, Dodge and Swiftness.
Speaking of Armored and Defensive strategy, Elias Max Pruitt a.k.a EMP is your main guy. This summoner reminds me of Grand Master Rathe due to its abilties and beard. The Armored Strike and Piercing tactic is so powerful specially when you bestow it to high Armored units like Pirate of Eight and Sea Dog of Eight.
Life Splinters
Life Rebellion Splinter redefines Defense in a whole lot of sense. When I said Chaos Golem is one of the best tanks, then Bera Dallin is the bestest. Armored Strike of 7 Armor, Shield and Void Armor, this tank will last the whole battle. If you are missing Corsair Bosun of CL, meet Ulundin Regulator. This card has the cleanse of Bosun and the True Strike (and face) of Jared Scar.
Life shares the use of Eternal Tofu and EMP summoners. With this a variety of OP combinations can be used specially when you use Commander Goff in the mix of it. Boasting the abilities Inspire, Dodge, Divine Shield and Resurrect, it is an enemy hard to beat. Male version of Adelade Brightwing?
Dragon Splinters
What else can we say about the Dragon Rebellion Cards but simply "Sophisticatedly Powerful". With Night Reaper and her new ability of Wing Breaker, it surely defies any logic (imagine hitting a flying unit even if it is in front). From the RedWyrm family to Rage, all of the Dragon units are so insane. Specially the Legendary Summoner.
What's insane about this summoner is it gives +2 Speed and Execute Ability to not just one, not two but THREE monsters. This is to compensate its debilitation Force Reduction which reduces the Team Size by 1.
Neutral Splinters
Neutral Splinters doesn't fall behind when it comes to OP-ness. You will never be out of Neutral cards in Shades of Gray ruleset. Most notable cards are Venka The Vile, Mantaroth, Chaos Battle Mage and Grimbardun Smith. All of these cards has something new to offer in battles. Venka is a good Trampler, Grimbardun Smith is a good tank with Shield, Immunity, Repair and Void. Mantaroth has Shield, Armored Strike, True Strike, Repair and Blast. Chaos Battle Mage is the only Rebellion Card so far with Rebirth. x
What To Expect For Conclave Arcana
Expect the unexpected. CA can have the following but not limited to new abilities and innovations:
- More Debilitations
- Force Addition (opposite of Force Reduction)
- New OP Abilities like Status Explosion (this is just my thought out ability)
- Factions (cards affect another card because of their affiliation. This is somewhat introduced with Kindred Spirit and Blasphemy of Uul)
- Hardcore Mode
- Glamour
