Splinterlands Social Media Challenge: Amplifying counter damage is a valid strategy

in Splinterlands4 days ago

Splinterlands is a pretty complicated game with interesting battles with all the options available. This is a part of the weekly social media challenge for Splinterlands. This week is about a great fight where I won because of Captain Katie and the damage it can put out.

Featured cards

Chaos Animator is a death splinter that costs 3 mana and it starts with amplify. It learns void at level 3 and redemption at level 10. I have this card at level 3 so it has both void and amplify.

Rule set, Battle and Plan

The ruleset this time is Counterspell and Fire & regret. This means that all monsters start off with the return fire and magic reflect abilities. There are 44 mana available and I am left with the choice of life or death splinter.

Thaddius Brood decreases my opponent's health and magic by 1. My Tank is Cursed Windeku due to the thorns and heal. After that is Pallus as a reach monster. My third monster is Chaos Animator for its amplify. Then I have a sneak monster with a opportunity monster after. My last monster is Harlaw with shield and demoralize. This ruleset makes it more optimal to use melee monsters so you don't get any counter damage.

Round 1

round 1.png
At first glance, I think that I have the advantage in this match. My opponent has 3 ranged monsters and they will take massive damage from the counter damage. My opponent won't be able to do much to me after those ranged monsters die.

Round 2

round 2.png
My opponent lost two monsters while I didn't lose any. My tank is almost dead though. However, both of the other ranged monsters in the back are almost dead. At this point, I don't think there is any way for my opponent to make a comeback as those melee monsters are debuffed.

I won a few turns later like I expected while only losing 1 monster.

Conclusion

The battle this time around went as I expected. There wasn't much that my opponent could do when he used all those ranged monsters. I was able to amplify the counter damage so they didn't last more than 2 attacks. The rest of my opponent's lineup couldn't do much and that sneak monster couldn't break through Harklaw as it debuffed the melee monsters. It was a clean win due to all of these factors. I don't know why my opponent felt like he should use ranged monsters with that type of ruleset available. The battle played out exactly like I expected and I wasn't in any danger of losing at all.

You can see my entire match here.

The Harklaw with the demoralize is such a brilliant card. I'm guessing it gets that demoralize at level 3?

Yes. It gains demoralize at level 3.

It's good you choose Captain Katie because she helped you win the battle. I think you did well in this particular battle. You're getting better at SPS every day that passes. Thanks for sharing. Happy New Year.

Ops. I made a mistake towards the top. This post wasn't about Captain Katie and I forgot to fix it.

Amplify is kinda niche, you need good ruleset, proper monsters

It is situational, but I think it can be quite useful. In this particular ruleset, ranged and magic damage was already countered. So I just boosted that.
