Card Highlights #01: Queen Mycelia
────────────◈◉◈────────────
“She is the roots and the trees,
The matriarch of reeds.
The decaying marsh,
With a stinging bite oh so harsh.
She is the eyes of the wood,
And all understood.
Those who walk in her domain, take their last breath.
And all will worship the Queen of Fungus and Death.”
- Poem of the Sovereign of Silence

Hello again, my coffee loving friends! This is something I wanted to do and share for quite a while. I've been busy recently juggling all of my personal matters so I was only able to write another blog now besides the weekly battle mage secrets. I also got to Silver 3 two seasons ago but I went back to Bronze because I was not able to focus. Hopefully, I can get back to Silver and do better blogs.
In this series, I will provide a better insight on each card that I think are very strong and a must have in every collection. Right now, I would say that most of these would be legendary cards because they are the most interesting but I will try to make it diverse if I find something good on lower rarities.
I will also avoid cards that are close to unusable or have very little use in order to make these blogs entertaining and informative.
Lore
A dark and dank estate was overseen by a fearsome noble woman. She craved ever more and more, and had her slaves dig deep into the mountains that bordered her home. Seeking riches within the depths. But when no riches emerged, she became fierce and violent. Demanding harder and harder work. And the slaves dug more. And within the depths of the mountains, they unearthed a horror beyond their comprehension.
The first happening was the growth turning on the manor. Food became poisoned. Vines blocked doors and obscured windows. And spores sprouted everywhere.
Then the slaves became corrupted. Their bodies turned into hosts for parasitic fungus. Long after they died, their bodies shambled around the grounds. It was a menace that could not be controlled.
As the woman's estate fell into chaos, she couldn't bear the shame of seeking help from outsiders. Instead, she went into the mountains herself to uncover the source of this horror that had ruined her.
And there she came across her. At that time, Queen Mycelia was more a collection of fungus in a loose physical form. But when she consumed the noble woman, she altered her own appearance to look like a fearsome female in a gown.
She continued to spread her corruption across the estate. She'd never experienced such growth and such control before. Realizing she could now extend her powers even further and turn more creatures into her slaves, she traveled.
She corrupted each land she crossed, claiming the plants, claiming the people, and leaving behind a trail of fungal rot. She walked both above the earth and below, a female figure in the fog. But any that got too close realized terrors beyond their comprehension.
And finally, her journeys brought Queen Mycelia to the Realm of Silence under Praetoria. Praetoria's trees and roots stretched far down here, she could call out to so many servants. The whole continent could be hers. But why stop there? The Chaos Legion had means to reach even further. One day, the entire Splinterlands would be under her control.
Buy and Rental Costs
I've only reached silver 3 once before so I have experience on using level 2 legendaries. Queen Mycelia is not something that excites me. The $17.00 price of a level 2 Queen Mycelia does not seem efficient because the Amplify ability feels underwhelming. I suggest sticking on that level 1 for $5.15 instead since you only need the Protect for your team. |
For the rental, you have an option of a 5.20 DEC for a level 2 and a little over 1.00 DEC for a level 1. These options are good enough for bronze and silver and is cheap enough for you to rent for a long time. |
Card Stats
Queen Mycelia's stats doesn't change from level 1 to level 4. Her low stats befits her position as a Queen and you need to protect her in order to fully appreciate her abilities.
Card Effects
Protect |
This ability will allow you to protect not only Queen Mycelia but also other units that have low health against sneak, snipe, scattershot and opportunity.
Amplify |
and Thorns damage to all enemy units by 1. |
Some units that you can use this are Venari Knifer and Failed Summoner. Both of them are Earth and are starting units. You can use them without buying one but you will have some reward penalties after the battle.
Triage |
that has taken the most damage. |
This ability works really good with another Earth unit, Mycelic Slipspawn. Mycelic Slipspawn has magic damage that allows him to attack from the back. This would allow Queen Mycelia to use her Triage while Mycelic Slipspawn can use both his Taunt and magic attacks.
Rust |
This ability is good against units with Void Armor. Rust can reduce the opponent's armor that blocks the attack of mages.
Strengths & Weaknesses
When To Use
Little League |
Units with 4 mana or less have usually low health so having increased armor and health is very good. In addition to that, the Rust that removes the opponent's armor is strong as well in this rule set because of the reason I said.
Explosive Weaponry |
Not all but most of the Sneak, Opportunity, Scattershot and Snipe abilities have monsters that are either range or melee damage. While there are magic type units with those abilities, these are very seldom and having armor can protect your back row immensely while doing your own damage.
Weak Magic |
This rule set is both a pro and a con depending on how you look at it. Yes, your magic damage will hit the armor also but your Protect and Rust is twice as powerful.
When Not To Use
Unprotected |
and do not get armor from Abilities or Summoner Buffs. |
This rule set removes armor, any way to add armor such as Protect, and abilities to restore the lost armor such as Repair. This shuts down her abilities and choosing another monster is better than pushing for Queen Mycelia.
Equal Opportunity |
While this rule set may help, since Queen Mycelia has very low health, it's hard to protect her when every opponent is after her low life.
Noxious Fumes |
Poison passes through armor. Despite how much armor you have, poison bypasses that and in turn, your team will still take damage each turn. Due to her low health, she would only survive 2 turns.

Have one tank with high health to take care of the opponent in the front and another one at the back to protect the rear. Use as much magic damage as possible to complement with Obsidian as Queen Mycelia protects everyone.
Final Thoughts
Queen Mycelia might not be the overpowered, all you need unit like Quora but she's certainly a standard. In all your Earth team, you need Queen Mycelia for that Protect ability. All elements have their own version of Sneak or Opportunity units and it would mess up with your mages because of their low health. Queen Mycelia is very crucial to support your team against this.
In addition to that, you can also abuse Queen Mycelia's Protect abiltiy by using a bunch of lower leveled monster and build this wall of mini monsters with extra 2 armor each that is very strong on low mana battles such as Little League.
Queen Mycelia is a mandatory card if you want to use Earth as one of your main teams.
