Card Highlights #41: Diemonshark
────────────◈◉◈────────────
We provoke a shark every time we enter the water where sharks happen to be, for we forget: The ocean is not our territory - it's theirs.

Diemonshark is not a new card. Ever since the release of Chaos Legion, he was one of the best tank. There's a lot of things that happened ever since and a lot more cards have been released since then. Is Diemonshark still the strongest tank for Water Element in Modern Ranked Format?
Lore
Diemonsharks travel alone throughout the stars searching for prey and territory. They are fearsome beasts with lightning-fast reflexes. Diemonsharks are extremely territorial and attack any creature that encroaches on their land.
The Chaos Legion trains them as transports for equipment. Since they can travel by air, ground, or sea, they are ideally suited for the task.

Card Effects
Trample |
A really strong ability because of his high damage. This gives him the ability to attack once more when landing that final hit. This ability also complements his other abilities and works well with them.
Enrage |
Enrage increases this unit's damage and speed by half when his health gets damaged. Higher damage means higher chance the Trample would activate and higher speed allows him to miss less.
Retaliate |
Retaliate also complements both of the abilities. If you Retaliate a unit and killed it, Trample will activate as long as the unit killed is not the last unit. Enrage also help because the Retaliate damage is based on the unit's current attack and not the original one. If the unit has increased attack from Enrage or Inspire, the increased attack is the one taken accounted for.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Diemonshark's strength lies on his stats and abilities. He certainly packs a lot of punch with the complimenting high damage and abilities. His armor and health are also good making him a decent front line. |
Diemonshark's weakness is his high mana usage and lack of defensive abilities. He has no Shield or Void to reduce an enemy's attack. If an enemy has abilities like Knock Out and Diemonshark is stunned, he takes double damage which may make his high health useless. |
When To Use
Super Sneak |
With Super Sneak rule set, you can use Diemonshark like a trap. Since his Retaliate only works on melee units that attacked him, and Super Sneak only gives Sneak ability to melee units, placing Diemonshark at the back will allow his Retaliate to shine while being able to attack at the same times since he would get Sneak as well being a melee unit.
Weak Magic |
Weak Magic rule set gives Diemonshark the protection he needs. This makes his armor block magic attacks increasing the chance he would die in the early rounds.
Rise of the Commons |
Rise of the Commons rule set limits the unit choices to Commons and Rare units only. Diemonshark is a rare unit so he definitely fits this limitation.
When Not To Use
Blood and Sunder |
This rule set gives all units Corrosive Ward which only affects melee units. This is bad for Diemonshark whose one of the strength is his high armor.
Briar Patch |
If everyone on the enemy team has Thorns, Diemonshark takes 2 damage whenever he attacks. Since Retaliate and Trample are also considered an attack, he gets 2 additional damage for each time this activates and hits.
Unprotected |
Just like Blood and Sunder rule set, this affects Diemonshark's armor reducing his strength. He is still viable but his ability to survive for longer is cut by a large amount.

Due to the enemy's magic attacks, Diemonshark's Enrage was used early allowing him to take down the enemy's main tank at the start. This made it easier for my team to slowly pick apart their lineup with the combined efforts of Opportunity and Reach attacks.
Final Thoughts
Diemonshark is a really strong tank for Water element but due to his lack of defensive abilities, I can't call him the best. His high health is a big bonus but since he doesn't have Taunt like The Kraken, using a team focusing on Tank Heal and Repair is risky.
In turn, I tend to use Diemonshark with a very offensive-oriented melee team, usually with Deeplurker and Coastal Sentry, along with Possibilus the Wise as the summoner. This is a very strong lineup with big damage to throw on your enemies.
Even though Diemonshark has strong offense and high health, his weakness is still crystal clear. To counter this kind of team, using units with high magic attack will do. If you encounter this kind of lineup, either use water mages or Earth Mages with Obsidian and I'll be sure you would win without a hitch.
