The splinterlands season end is almost upon us and that means -- time to spend all that Glint earned during the season, however, where does it make sense to spend Glint? Do you spend it on loot chests or rarity draws? Let's dive in and consider the probabilities of each to determine efficiently where to spend Glint.
The Basics
The splinterlands support documentation provides a very good explanation of Glint and the Glint Reward shop.
So Why Choose Loot Chests?
If you love that feeling of a casino and/or like the feeling of opening blind/loot boxes, with a mixture of different rewards then loot chests are for you. Also, there is a small probability chance of landing a jackpot prize, but the odds are very small. Some of the main reasons I can think of to go the loot chests route:
- Mixture of Rewards
- Loot chests will give you a mixture of rewards (like energy boosts or merits). Therefore, if you looking to fill up on regular rewards (potions, energy boosts) then going for minor chests is recommended. However, if you want higher chances of jackpot prizes then the ultimate chest should be chosen as that has the highest probability for jackpot prizes.
- Budget Friendly
- Minor chests allow you to gain rewards at a lower Glint spend. This approach is ideal for players who don't have a lot of Glint and/or don't want to spend it all at once.
- Jackpot potential
- As mentioned above, whether you open minor (0.01%) or ultimate (1%) chests, there is always a jackpot chance regardless of how small they are. But please manage expectations and realise that the chances are very small to get a jackpot prize. I got lucky in the first week and managed to get a Land plot but since then nothing.
When Rarity Draws Are a Better Choice
Rarity draws will always be better when you have a specific goal in mind especially if you looking to complete a particular splinter or level up a monster card. Some of the main reasons I can think of to go the reward chests route:
- Completing Specific Splinter / Card
- The rarity draws chests provide a focused way to spend your Glint and the percentages and pull rates are higher than the loot chests. Also, ensures you are not spending your Glint on unrelated rewards (energy boosts etc.).
- Gold Foils
- Gold foils are so pretty to look at and the chances of getting gold foils (2% base, doubled with potions) are increased in rarity draws.
- Targeting Legendries
- This one is obvious, but this is where rarity draws shines. This is a solid way to spend your Glint and ensure you are getting legendary (sometimes meta-defining) cards.
General Strategy for New Players
Whichever option you go for, you will need to weigh the probabilities and determine how that will guide and focus your spending.
- Small Budget
- If you have a limited Glint balance, minor chests will give you a broad spectrum of rewards and is a sustainable way to accumulate various resources over time.
- Ultimate chests for jackpot chances
- If you strictly go for jackpots, then ultimate chests will have the best probability at 1%, but also the most expensive chests. High risk, high reward.
- Rarity draws for consistency.
- If you are a new player and looking for ways to consistently build a deck -- then going for rarity draws is a no-brainer.
Concluding Thoughts
I've fluctuated between all the various approaches and options, and I am happy with the state of my splinterlands deck, so I almost always go for the ultimate chests to give myself a chance at the jackpot prizes. With the leftover glint, I then do minor chests or rarity draws but it's all dependent on how many glints I have leftover. Ultimately, deciding where to spend your Glint will depend on your current goals, splinterlands collection and how much you are willing to spend for a chance at rarer rewards.
