Splinterlands has always been a game of strategy and learning from experience. But with the introduction of the new Training Mode, players now have an opportunity to practice and refine their skills without the pressure of ranked play. This mode allows you to test out different cards, experiment with strategies, and level up your gameplay against automated opponents -- all without affecting your rank. Training Mode is an excellent addition to splinterlands, and its true power lies in how players use it and foster the principles of deliberate practice.
What is Training Mode?
Replacing the old Practice Mode, Training Mode in Splinterlands is a fully customizable experience designed to simulate real battles.
- Customizable AI Opponents: Choose AI opponents with varying levels of difficulty to match your current skill level or test new levels.
- Ghost Cards: Experiment with cards you do not own, giving you a chance to explore new team compositions and synergies.
- Risk-Free: Unlike ranked matches, Training Mode does not affect your rating, meaning you can focus solely on learning and improving.
The Power of Deliberate Practice
Deliberate practice is the cornerstone of mastery, whether you are learning an instrument, perfecting a sport, or dominating the Praetoria battlefield. If you think deliberate practice is about endless repetitions, you are wrong. It is about structured and intentional learning. Here is how you can apply principles of deliberate practice to splinterlands new Training Mode.
Set Clear Goals
Every match in Training Mode should start with a specific goal. Are you testing the new ghost cards of a new set? Or practising counterstrategies for a difficult summoner. Knowing what goal, you want to achieve ensures your efforts are targeted and productive.
Break Down Your Skills
Winning battles in splinterlands requires a mix of deckbuilding, understanding how to optimize team lineups for different mana-caps, predicting your opposition's tactics and strategies, understanding the ins and outs of each ruleset and more. It will prove to be overwhelming if you try to improve everything at once, but each training session should be focused on one specific skill. For example -- how does utilizing different summoners impact the team synergy?
Push Beyond Comfort
Deliberate practice requires that you step outside your comfort zone. In Training Mode, this may mean battling against the increasingly higher difficult AI or using cards and strategies with which you are unfamiliar. Be prepared to fail often but treat these sessions as opportunities for learning.
Seek Feedback
While Training Mode itself will not provide feedback as to why you lost the battle (maybe a possible future enhancement?), but you can be your own coach. After each battle, review the replay. Did your monster's positioning make sense? Was there a better summoner choice? These failures will be your best teachers and will allow you to understand what went wrong and right and adjust accordingly.
Tips for Maximizing Training Mode
Here are a few additional tips to get the most out of your deliberate practice in Training Mode:
- Rotate Opponent Difficulty: Start with easier levels to build confidence, then progressively increase the difficulty to test how your strategies hold up against more progressively difficult AI opponents.
- Document Your Progress: Keep a record of your experiments and results. What worked? What did not? Over time, you will have a log of the different strategies and cards you used.
- No Default Lineups: Training Mode is a great place to try and test different playstyles and ensure you are prepared for the different situations that splinterlands puts you in.
Concluding Thoughts
In this post, I tried to relay the concept of deliberate practice and how it may be used with the new Training Mode. Training Mode provides the perfect setting for this kind of focused practice where mastery comes from dedication and one session at a time. By embracing these principles and taking it one session at a time -- you will not only become a better splinterlands player but also enjoy the journey of learning the game from a different perspective.
