Splinterlands: Using Underrated Cards!

Hey everyone, whether you're a Splinterlands enthusiast like myself, or someone interested in the game but isn't playing just yet, welcome back to my Splinterlands blog!

This week was a really busy one for me, even so much I forgot to put my alt accounts in the brawl for our second guild... 😒
Yesterday after a busy workday I was grinding my ranked battles to at least keep my energy below 50 to not lose on possible earnings I was scouting the Land market while waiting for an opponent, and I saw the floor price for common land plots was only $13 and out of all possible regions, it was in my region!
So I told myself, tomorrow when I get home from work I'll put some funds into my account and buy those three common plots only to find them already snagged an hour ago when I logged in to the game... 😣

This teaches me to jump on chances when you see them and don't wait, but well... I can't win them all, just like with my battles, so with this months play money I put into the game every month I bought myself two instead of three plots, but one was a rare which is also nice so I'm still happy! 😊

With the fee rebate I got from buying on monstermarket.io and the HBD blog payout from my post last week I had enough DEC to buy a power source for one of the lands, it will take me at least a couple of month before I can get them fully online but my focus for now is on acquiring more lands first because I don't think these low prices will last forever, and the cost for bringing land online will always stay the same.

This brings my total plots up to 8!😍

Community Engagement Challenge:

So, on with today's main topic, this weeks challenge is a cool one!

Not every card gets the spotlight, but that doesn’t mean it’s not powerful in the right hands! This week’s Community Engagement Challenge is all about underrated and underused cards—the hidden gems of Splinterlands that deserve a second look.
Challenge Theme: Battle of the Forgotten Cards!
🔍 Which card do you think is underrated?
💡 How do you use it effectively in battle?
🔥 Have you surprised an opponent with an unexpected strategy?

To find out how you can participate in this challenge yourself, check out the Splinterlands post here.

For this post I was thinking of what cards are underrated or forgotten and I was first thinking about all the older cards that now can only fight in Wild League so I wanted to make a post about Seamonster, which is an awesome card I use a lot on my alt account fighting in the Bronze Gold Foil Brawl Fray, it's really strong at low level, but then I thought at a cards that is new and underrated, I rarely see it used by my opponents, yet I love it!

Of course you could have seen the answer already by looking at my thumbnail, I'm talking about the Gobson Bomber!

I have to admit, this card only gets unable from Gold level and up, it has the camouflage ability, which is nice and you can put a martyr card in front of him, hoping it will get killed by an enemy sneak monster to boost his attack even more, but because of the recharge ability it's a lot less popular I think.

recharge.png

"Attacks every other round but deals triple damage."
Recharge will ignore Forcefield only if the base damage is less than 5.
Recharge is one of the modifiers applied after a Forcefield check is done on the base damage.
Damage returned from Magic Reflect or Return Fire is based on the Unit's base attack damage, not the total damage done from Recharge.

So, in my opinion, recharge has one major downside... and that's why I don't like monsters with this ability except for Uriel the Purifier because it has heal so he can sustain himself AND Gobson Bomber... When a recharge attack hits armor, even if it's just 1 armor, the complete attack gets wasted.

This is the reason why the Gobson Bomber only gets useful from Gold level and up, because it get the piercing ability, cutting trough armor and with the remaining damage it hits the Health Points as well, but yet this doesn't explain why I almost never see this monster played because I'm playing in Gold and Diamond with two accounts, it's a soulbound reward card and you need 100 copies of it so that could be the only reason I can think of...

Show us!!!

So, of course I want to show how good he is, and I have a lot of battle links saved in a text file I can later use to make posts with, but this was an unexpected challenge topic I didn't had any nice saved battle for, only one solution then, grind my battles until I have a suitable one, and it took me about half an hour! 😅

So, the battle for this post is a fresh one! It's a 37 mana, Modern League standard rule set battle with only the Death splinter locked out so plenty of available options to go for, I could see my opponent has max level summoners and I don't... on this account I only have Gold level summoners, the difference between Gold and Diamond is huge, many tanks get really strong in Chaos Legion with a lot of retaliate so I am definitely at a disadvantage already, I love water so that's my pick, too much options to counter anything so let's just make a strong team and see how this goes!

First look at the battlefield:

image.png

Damn, my opponent went for water as well, Diemon Shark with enrage and retaliate hits like a truck and gets really fast, the Swamp Spitter giant killer ability will hit my Commander Slade with double damage, I don't think this is going to work, and I finally had found a battle I could slip the Bomber in! 😅

So, I clicked 'Skip Battle' and was surprised to see I had won!

REPLAY!

My Line-Up:

  • Summoner: Kelya Frendul - reason: He's awesome, extra speed on top of a fast team and the +1 armor gives more survivability.
  • First position: Commander Slade - reason: Enfeeble is much better than I thought, I'm starting to love this card!
  • Second position: Flying Squid - reason: Good damage, high speed and the blind gives extra chance to dodge (I think it is 15%)
  • Third position: Ureaus - reason: Sneak with poison
  • Fourth position: Pelacor Bandit - reason: Good damage, high speed with flying makes this card awesome.
  • Fifth position: Venari Marksrat - reason: Martyr, hopefully my opponent plays a sneak!
  • Sixth position: Gobson Bomber - reason: The star of this post!

So my opponent didn't play a sneak card to kill my martyr right away, that's a bummer!

The Battle:

image.png

Round 1: Slade missed his attack, so no Enfeeble on Diemon Shark to reduce his damage.. Actually not much has happened just yet besides two units are poisoned...

image.png

Round 2: Well Diemon Shark is killed fast, and it was made possible by the star of this post, the Gobson Bomber, it's really fast with 5 speed so it's highly likely his attack actually hits, and it does 9 attack every other round with piercing, killing most units instantly, not with Diemon Shark but good teamwork together with Slade and the Squid killed him anyway, that's really good news! My Ureaus is also killed but that's not a game changer...

image.png

Round 3: This is the recharge round for the bomber so it doesn't do anything... Again not much has happened.

image.png

image.png

Round 4: BOOM! Another heavy blow from the Bomber, killing the enemy Flying Squid instantly, I captured the 9 damage in the screenshot 😃

image.png

Round 5: Hmm, my bandit will attack first, because of speed and rarity of the Deeplurker and the Bomber are the same, RNG is going to decide who attacks first but either way, as long as the Bombers attack hits, it will kill Deeplurker, only leaving Venator Kinjo left.. it's going to be a close call because only the Venari Marksrat is between my bomber and the first position...

image.png

Round 6: Well after all it wasn't as close as I thought because RNG was on my side, Deeplurker was killed before it could attack, my Bandit killed Kinjo and it's a win!

image.png

I beat max level decks sometimes but I usually get my ass kicked by the water team, not this time!
A nice 5 SPS and 500 glint.

You can watch the battle unfold for yourself here.

Gobson Bomber is actually not that strong. But you have him at least with Pierce, I can only play him up to level 5. 😂

On my other account I have him without piercing and never use him... the piercing makes all the difference.

Absolutely!

I don't think I've run into anyone with the piercing ability yet. Or the attack every other turn thing.

The update has def made land more desirable.

When I started I thought I would have never needed to level up cards and stay in the low levels, but the longer you're here the more you build up, with higher levels comes more abilities (and also more fun, to a certain degree)
