The Card
Mycelic Slipspawn is a 9 mana earth splinter card. For that it gets 10 HP, 2 magic damage, 2 speed and taunt. Later it gets forcefield and slow as well as more HP, damage and speed.
Generally Mycelic Slipspawn has great synergy with Obsidian, as it gets +1 magic damage, as well as with Queen Mycelia (lvl 3) and Spirit Hoarder and their triage ability.
With 12 HP the Slipspawn gets healed 4 HP, which is on the top side of heals. Forcefield helps to survive bigger hits.
Placed in the back, you can divert a lot of the enemy damage from the frontline to Mycelic Slipspawn thanks to its taunt ability. As it is a common strategy in Splinterlands to concentrate all damage on the front position, this can counter a lot of teams.
As a 9 mana minion, Mycelic Slipspawn is also safe from giant killer, which deals double damage only to minions at 10 mana and higher.
The Ruleset
The rulesets were Heavy Hitters and Holy Protection at 27 mana and only Death and Dragon banned.
Usually I care less for heavy hitters, because there are not that many cards with stun that most people use.
Divine Shield is something to look out for, as it can work well with certain cardswith abilities such as resurrect or just small minions that now tank 2 hits.
My Lineup
Summoner: Obsidian
As summoner I chose Obsidian. It is my highest summoner for earth and a very good one. Obsidian has great synergy with Mycelic Slipspawn as well as all all the other earth and neutral magic monsters.
Position 1: Grund
Grund takes the front position in this battle. With his double strike of 4 damage, he can hit divine shield first and then do some damage. Trample can also help get more hits out faster. He will be the main source of damage for my team and hopefully knock out the enemy.
Grund is a strong fighter, but not a good tank. All he has to protect himself is 11 HP. This is where Mycelic Slipspawn will come in handy. He will redirect most damage and act as tank to help Grund survive.
Position 2: Fungus Fiend
Fungus Fiend takes the second position to absorb a little bit more damage should Grund fall.
Divine shield and protect greatly benefit this little minion to tank more hits.
Position 3: Queen Mycelia
Queen Mycelia on the third position is ideally placed to not get killed until very late in the game.
She protects everyone with +2 armor and will heal Mycelic Slipspawn with her triage.
2 magic damage with the help of Obsidian are not too bad either.
Position 4: Mycelic Slipspawn
Mycelic Slipspawn takes the back position so he can be healed with triage. In case the enemy has Yodin Zaku (or other blast minions), the blast will only spread onto the third position.
3 magic damage will do a solid amount of damage.
The Battle
My opponent chose Yodin Zaku, but not a lot of ranged minions. Instead, he seemed to hope that Grund will get some bloodlust stacks with blast kills.
Good thing all my minions have +2 armor and divine shield, but the damage could still spread fast.
Blood Maker will ignore my Slipspawns taunt due to his scattershot.
Round 2 and all minions are still standing. We did some damage to each other, but everything is still open. This round may bring the decicive kills.
The opponents Grum has fallen and my big minions are still standing. When his Radiated Scorcher is dead, the Blood Maker will move up and not be able to attack anymore. The battle is pretty much won at this point.
Round 4 and only the Lava Spider remains. With no option left to attack, the victory is mine.
Did my strategy work?
Yes my strategie worked indeed. It is a solid strategy so I played some games until I found a game where it made sense to put this kind of composition into place. I think you can see the strong sides of this combination in the game very well, though it might not always work out as intended.
Do I like Mycelic Slipspawn?
Yes, I think it a very solid card that fits in well with the magic playstyle of Obsidian. The synergies with other cards are very convenient. You need enough mana to make it work though, and sometimes it can be better to put other big cards like Kron or Cornealus in the back.
