Splinterlands Social Media Challenge - Eternal Tofu is not an auto win

in Splinterlands2 days ago

Hello everyone! This is my first entry for this week's Splinterlands Social Media Challenge. Today, I'm sharing not one but two battles of mine in Modern Diamond Ranked.

Eternal Tofu is one of the best summoners in the game, likely the best in Modern format. However, it is not unbeatable and it shouldn't be blindly used. It is a 7 mana legendary summoner from the Rebellion set. It is a dual splinter summoner for Life and Earth. It has 3 abilities/buffs that it gives to the whole team: Thorns, Snare, and +2 HP. It also has 2 different choices for tactics. The first one is Divine Shield and Corrosive Ward to up to 3 targets. The second one is Scavenger and Triage to 1 target.

This game had the following rule sets: Up to Eleven, Explosive Weaponry, and Odd Ones Out. It was a 24 mana cap game with Earth, Life, and Death available. I went with Eternal Tofu and placed Halfling Refugee in front. I followed it up with Blackmoor Jinx and Fungus Flinger. Next, I placed Venka the Vile and finished the team with Satha Toledo. They opted for Reklah using Pelacor Deceiver as their tank. Venari Marksrat and Venka were next. Life Sapper was the 4th unit and they finished the team with their own Halfling Refugee. It was a very interesting team on their side. It's unusual to see Reklah but it makes perfect sense here. Giving Reflection Shield to 2 units when one rule set buffs damage reflect effects and another gives Blast to all units, can be game-changing. They gave it to Deceiver and Venka. I gave Scavenger and Triage to Venka.

Round 1

The Snare from Tofu was fantastic as it made sure my Venka wouldn't miss the Deceiver. It left it at 3 HP (4 after the buff) and killed Marksrat with the Blast damage. Their Venka attacked next but it missed my Halfling due to Fungus Flinger's Blind. The Deceiver didn't miss, though. Thankfully, my Halfling didn't get Exhausted and it killed the Deceiver.

Round 2

Their Venka put my Halfling to 2 HP and eliminated Blackmoor Jinx. However, my own Venka took out the rest of their team thanks to Blast and Trample.

The game might have seemed an easy one for me but if Venka hit on the first round, I'm pretty sure I would have lost. I also made a big mistake with my Tactics. I should have gone with 3 Divine Shields since that would help slow down their attacks. With that, I wouldn't need them to miss. Here we can see mistakes can be made with the Tactics.

This game had the following rule sets: Keep Your Distance, Holy Protection, and Unprotected. It was a 19 mana cap game with only Life inactive. I went with Lorkus and started with the Weapons Training combination of Chaos Agent and Moxian Rebel. I used Life Sapper next and finished the team with Continuum Seer. They opted for Tofu with a complete Weapons Training combo of Grimbardun Smith, Moxian Rebel, and Chaos Agent. They finished with Blackmoor Jinx and Elanor Bravefoot. I give Life Leech and Affliction to Moxian Rebel and Continuum Seer. They gave Divine Shield and Corrosive Ward to their first 3 units.

Round 1

We traded blows and my Chaos Agent ended the round with 1 HP, while their Grimbardun was at 5. They did miss the Grimbardun attack, which would have killed my Agent if it hit.

Round 2

First, I took out their Grimbardun but they also quickly finished my Agent.

Rounds 3, 4, 5, and 6

I eliminated one of their units per round, without losing any of mine and finished the game during the 6th round.

This was one of those games where they were probably playing while distracted. Keep Your Distance makes the most dangerous part of Tofu irrelevant, which is the Thorns ability. Holy Protection makes the Divine Shield part of the first tactics useless. Unprotected makes the second one useless. These two rule sets make Tofu even worse because one of the Tactics doesn't do anything but they even forgot and used it anyway. Triage wouldn't have done anything but Scavenger would have had some utility. On top of all that, Life is not available, so it's one more reason not to use Tofu. In fact, all of their units except for Blackmoor Jinx were neutral. They could have used any other summoner better here! Obsidian or Immortalis would be much better if they wanted to stay with Earth. I would have likely lost to an Obsidian, especially if they included Acid Shooter.

What do you all think about these games? Would you have done anything different? Let me know in the comments! Thank you for reading!!

Sort:

Eternal is a great card, but it is not invicible as you said. Winning against Eternal feels a bit like winning against Yodin, back in the days when Untamed was in the Modern format. 😂

Yeah. Against Yodin, Kitty, Llama+Kron, or even Mylor.
