No Taunt Unit, How to Choose The Tanker in The Ruleset Lost Magic ?

Hello Everyone, this week I want to discuss beginner strategies in the Lost Magic ruleset that can be used when no unit with the Taunt ability can be used/u don't want to use it because u may prefer more attacker/support units.

Note : I play with my Scholar account with only a limited card (Chaos Legion, reward card, and rent several old cards like Doctor Blight, Arkemis The Bear, Dumacke Exile, etc.), I don't have summoner with dual tactics. So this strategy may only suit players that rent/have cheap card. I play in Modern format Diamond/Champ League.



The Strategy and Ability U Can Use in the Lost Magic Ruleset

In the Lost Magic ruleset, there are only 2 types of units u can use, melee and range. The ability we can consider to use:

  • Buff/debuff Speed/ability to evade the enemy attack, also with the higher speed we have a chance to attack first and kill the enemy unit before they can attack :
AbilityDescription
Swiftness, All friendly Units have increased speed by +1.
Slow, reduces the speed of all enemy unit by -1.
Dodge, has an increased chance of evading melee or ranged attacks by +25%.
Flying, has an increased chance of evading melee or ranged attacks from a unit that do not have the Flying ability by +25%.
Blind, all enemy melee & ranged attacks have an increased chance of missing their target by +15%.


  • Defend/decrease damage ability :
AbilityDescription
Shield, reduced damage from melee and ranged attacks. Attack damage gets halved (rounded up), except attack 1 which deals 0 damage.
Demoralize, reduces the melee attack of all enemy Monsters by -1.
Headwinds, reduces the range attack of all enemy Monsters by -1.
  • We must use unit with the Shield if we have a good unit with that ability, especially for tankers.
  • For Demoralize and Headwinds, we must guess if the enemy will use many range or melee.

Battle Example

In this battle, both players use tankers with the same Shield ability.
The enemy focuses on increasing the speed and evading the enemy attack by using a summoner that can give Dodge ability and bring a unit with Repair to restore the armor every round. Our team brings Thane Newsong and Quix the summoner who can decrease the range damage by -1 with a total decrease in range damage by -2.

In this battle, we can win because we decrease the range of enemy damage, with only a little damage, and decrease more by Shield ability, our only tanker Carnage Titan can hold for a while against 2 melee tankers, although the enemy bring Junker who have Repair ability.

Conclusion

I think the enemy's strategy is also quite good using a combination of various abilities that are suitable for use in the Lost Magic ruleset, it's just that the combination of formations we use is better because we bring units and summoners which can reduce a lot of enemy damage even though we only bring 1 melee tanker the Carnage Titan and without any support our tanker hold long enough, while the enemy bringing Junker which can repair armor from Harklaw, and also with the help of Runic Skyclaw we can kill the enemy unit behind the Meriput Slinger who has speed debuff, making it easier for us achieve victory.

In the Lost Magic ruleset when there is no unit with the Taunt ability then we can only depend on the tanker in the first position, if we suspect the enemy will use many unit with the Sneak (attacking unit in the last position) ability we can place another tanker behind, there are 2 tankers that we can use based on the abilities we discussed above:

  • Tankers who rely on their evasion abilities to survive, for example:


    Astral Entity actually not a unit but a summoner but we include it cause it can give Dodge ability to all of ally unit, this is the summoner which enemy use in the battle. If they use Pelacor Deceiver unit combined with the Astral Entity, we may have difficulty hitting it, cause it have high speed and have Flying and Dodge ability.
  • Tankers who rely on their ability to receive attacks with Shield abilities such as Carnage Titan and Harklaw used in this battle, other units examples:
