Hello there! @saydie here, playing Splinterlands everyday!

2024 has been a challenging year for Splinterlands, beginning with laying off half of their workforce to asking the Hive community and @sps.dao to help in funding the company to develop and market the game but even so, I believe that 2024 was also a very fruitful year in terms on what the game has accomplished. There was the TECH Modernization done along with various quality of life as well as the Free-To-Play mode and the new Ambassador Program. The game has spent this year focusing on the gameplay to make it sure that when the marketing officially starts, the game will be presented to new players in the best possible condition. Aside from that, there are also other things that the team is trying to get done during the 1st quarter of the year such as the release of Land 1.75, Survival Mode and the deployment of Validator Nodes. Not only that, Custom Challenges which may not be much of the priority but will also be coming soon to Splinterlands.

In this post, I want to talk about why having custom challenges can be a wonderful addition to the game.

Custom Challenges

Challenges is not a new concept to the game. Through this, we can play the game across different leagues without the need to spend any energy and we can choose which cards will be allowed to play along with the option to play ghost challenges that allows even the use of cards that we do not own. But most of all is that we can choose the people whom we want to challenge. Just by placing their username, we could challenge our friends to a match to study different strategies without any consequences. Streamers even use this feature to have their audience challenge them or even held live tournaments during their stream. However, during this challenges, we do not have a means to change the rulesets, mana cap and the available elements that will be available in a match. But apparently, the team is on its way on updating challenges to be able to customizes the rulesets, mana cap and the available elements and this was thanks to a screenshot that was shared by @antiosh in discord which opens up new benefits to the community.

Benefits of Custom Challenges

1️⃣ Train New Players

Assuming I was able to onboard a new player to the game, teaching can become easier through custom challenges cause now I can slowly walk him through the different rulesets and card elements and let him experience it with a battle which is based to the ruleset and element that I am teaching to the new player, lowering the learning curve of the game.

2️⃣ Trying Out Cards Becomes Easier

Recently, I made a post about the Hall of Legends Final Phase & Voucher Card, deeping dive each card, particularly the hall of legends card since they are not yet available for sale. But just looking at the cards does not give us the full picture of the cards capabilities and how they synergizes to the current meta and the only way that we can really know about this is to try them in battle and through ghost challenges, I was able to try those cards even though they are not yet available. But in order to do that, I need to invite myself a couple of times just to have a single battle where I can use those cards due low mana cap, the elements not present or the available ruleset which is a tremendous pain. But when the custom challenges becomes available, having to try this card will become easier. Because of that, it may also help players to decide if they want to buy the card and on what level they will level up the card to make it competitive enough for the league that they are playing, specially since the games meta can change depending on what league we play.

Final Thoughts

There was no estimated time when custom challenges will be added to the game but just knowing that it was in development is already a great news in to me knowing that in future, I could be able to try the cards first more thoroughly before I decide whether to buy them or not as well as the possibility it brings to help teach new players to learn the game easier.

Thank you and see you at the next post.
