Hello there! @saydie here, playing Splinterlands everyday!
Rebellion
was the 5th major set that was introduced into Splinterlands and just like the previous sets, it has introduced a new batch of abilities to the game, expanding the variety of strategies and card synergies that we can use to win our battle. That is why it is important for us to familiarize with how this new abilities work.
And so, with the previous weeks, I did started to have my in depth review on the Rebellion abilities to know what are their weakness and which situations they prevail. I temporarily paused it last week to give way for my review on the promo event but I once again resume it this week to take a look on the Wingbreak Ability
.
What is Wingbreak Ability?
Wingbreak
is an ability that was first introduced as part of the new Rebellion soulbound rewards. This ability allows for a monster to always target the first unit that has a Flying, regardless of its abilities, modifiers or position. This means that even a unit that has a Wingbreak
ability was placed in the first position, it will still attack first any Flying unit that it first detected, even when it was placed on the very last position. At the same time, if the unit that is the target of the attack has the Flying ability, Wingbreak
will inflict +2 additional damage into it.
Prons
Will always attack units with Flying, regardless of their position.
Wingbreak takes priority before Sneak, Snipe and Opportunity as well as unaffected by Aimless ruleset as long as there is Flying opponent units.
Units with Wingbreak are resistant to Taunt ability, so long as a Flying target is available.
Units with Wingbreak can see through Flying units even if they are Camouflage.
Inflicts additional +2 damage whenever attacking units with Flying ability.
Cons
Wingbreak only works on as long as there are Flying units and attacks on non-flying units will not trigger the +2 damage.
So long as Flying opponents exist, A lineup with Wingbreak unit cannot focus fire on a single target.
Best Ruleset
![]() Earthquake | Non-flying Monsters take 2 Melee damage at the end of each round. |
![]() Fog of War | Monsters lose the ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Basically, using units with Wingbreak
works with most rulesets as long as there were Flying units to target but you can always expect the opponent to use Flying units during Earthquake ruleset and can use Wingbreak
units to counter them while it also allows Flying units to be targeted even when it was hidden during Fog of War ruleset.
Cards with Wingbreak Ability

As of the moment, the only cards with the Wingbreak
ability was Night Reaper which is an epic soulbound rewards card and it also happens to be a Flying unit so it becomes the ideal anti-Flying, Flying unit.
Battle Showcase
During this battle, I used the summoner Quix the Devious so that I could use the the card Night Reaper with it's Wingbreak ability. Fortunately, my opponent has Flying units available so that Wingbreak could inflict more damage into them.
Immediately, on the first round Night Reaper has inflicted 3 damage to Void Dragon even though it was on the second position as it has the Flying ability. Also with Void, Void Dragon was only supposed to receive 2 damage as it was halve but because of Wingbreak, there was an additional damage into it. How it comes with those damage comes with this interaction.
3 Original Damage + 2 Wingbreak Damage = 5 Total damage / 2 (Void) = 3 (Rounded Up)
Fast forward to round 4, Night Reaper was able to inflict the final blow to VOid Dragon. This has left Rage as the only Flying unit that is left on the opponent team.
Even with Rage, Night Reapear still inflict the same amount of damage since it also has the Void ability but that does not prevent my team on defeating my opponent.
Closing
As a new ability that comes with Rebellion, Wingbreak
can be really powerful when placed on the right ruleset and against right opponent but was not rule breaking enough that it will ruin the game's balance. The ability was only given on one unit for now but I expect that the next set will have units with the Wingbreak
though I think that it should be kept with 2-4 units for each set so that it does not break the balance with Flying ability.
Thank you and see you at the next post.

Only one unit... will this one of the abilities we see more of in CA?
Most likely but I expect not too many to not bully Flying too much as it was already getting wreaked by Tofu.
That is true indeed...
This new ability wingebreak, a powerful ability in the game. So you hold more cards from rebellion edition or old version also?
I have some CL cards at max levels and about bronze level for Rebellion core cards. Mainly renting now to play at a higher league but will likely to play at lower league once the next set comes.
