Splinterlands Strategies: Splinterlands March Rambles

In a few days, SplinterRents will cease to exist and close up shop. I am quite sad that a decision by @splinterlands has forced a well-loved dApp to retire and have expressed my opinion with zero response (as usual).

image.png

However, my ranting and protests ended some time ago and I now need to look forward and decide how to keep gaining between 15,000 and 20,000 DEC a day. That is what my 'spares' amount to, as well as @dismayedworld being a regular top thirty player in the Gold league.

There is SPLEX of course, who unlike SplinterRents have adapted to the 1 DEC per transaction rule thrown upon us with little notice. SPLEX has a beautiful-looking website, which overwhelms the user with features but there is just one problem.

...'One of my accounts; SPLEX is undeniably slick and feature rich, but I want to be rich.., not them'...

It's too fucking expensive for my tastes. I want my rent money and while the eye candy is nice, DEC is much nicer and dishing out 2,000 DEC a day grates.

So on the 7th of March, I will be cancelling ALL of my rentals and playing it by ear for a while. I do remember how to rent manually using PeakMonsters and for the expensive cards that will be my preference.

Adjusting prices is now a costly affair given the sheer amount of cards I have, so I will staunchly refuse to rent anything at a cost of less than 4 DEC per day. If cards don’t rent then they will come off the market and gather dust in my wallet.

image.png
...'L1 Screaming Banshees are going to be significantly higher to rent soon. From the 7th of March, all these renters will be making a net loss at these rates'...

That will include many 1 BCX cards but many beta cards of L2 and L3 that don't fit my price criteria. While I am pissed at Splinterlands for 'charging' their dedicated supporters and investors over the last few years to what amounts as 'eBay listing fees', I feel the lack of supply over time may force the rental values up.

I can see that many of the smaller cardlords are going to suffer with this new rule set and perhaps we may see another mass sale of reward cards being offered soon.

I am buying if you are offloading. I need those slaves to work my land, as well as many of the <4 DEC per day monsters I currently own. Something is going to happen after the 7th of March, and I am not quite sure what that is as yet.

image.png
...Cheap reward cards are being snapped up. There may be another glut of them on the market again shortly'...

The last packs of Chaos Legion are still for sale and being offered in a sale. I will be glad when this overprinted set is finally gone and out of print. While there's little wrong with the cards, it's a throwback to what Magic the Gathering did all wrong and that is producing too much.

I feel Splinterlands may have learned from Chaos Legion and will tone back the print run for the coming Rebellion. How much appetite the community has for another set cannot be speculated on, but RiftWatchers are barely moving.

image.png
...'Is Lily Shieldpaw the Queen of the Chaos Legion Legendary Summoners, as well as being the most expensive?'...

Recently I have been buying many Lily Shieldpaws. While Lily is no replacement for Byzantine Kitty I have a good feeling about this Dragon summoner. The control aspect gives the wielder a great advantage I feel, and even facing a Conqueror Jacek opponent, it still doesn't give them full control of their monsters' abilities.

@hawks21 has been authoring up some decent videos highlighting Lily Strategies and feels similarly optimistic about Lily. He's very bullish on Conqueror Jacek focusing on the 2-speed advantage.

image.png
...'@hawks21 does some decent Splinterlands Strategies videos, they are worth watching'...

Speed does kill in Splinterlands, maybe he has a point.

Being the last summoner also makes Lily the rarest, but we all have to remember there’s still a shit-load of Chaos Legion packs out there still not opened.

Going forward a month, we will see Chaos Legion finally gone but don’t expect the prices of these cards to rocket. We are still living in a Chaos Legion over-saturated world and in the short term little is going to change.

image.png
...'The Land hype is real, everyone is waiting for Surveying to arrive, things might heat up after it does'...

By then surveying will be live and our useless plots are going to become a little more meaningful. Until then, it would be wise to scoop as many cheap Reward cards up as possible, preferably maximum level versions if you own many PLOT.

Splinterlands still have not made a final decision about Summoners on land which I personally find irritating. I do know they are not required but feel that if they do take up one of the FIVE slots per PLOT, a decent bonus should be applied depending on level.

The essence of Summoners is to whip your monsters into a frenzy and win battles. Why not utilise that same mentality on land?

What about the auto rent feature of peakmonsters? It only works out about 3 dollars odd a month I think if you pay in PKM?

Sometimes I think of just binning a load of my cards and only keeping legendary and epic ones to keep it manageable

I haven't looked into it yet, @jarvie was explaining it to me in Amsterdam but at the time I was happily engaged with SplinterRents. The other services will be taking a bunch of 'refugees' in soon so it's worth considering.

SPLEX must be jumping around with joy and if it wasn't so bloody expensive I would be jumping on their bandwagon.

I used to do all this stuff manually before the emergence of the rental services, and now with these charges, the need to update frequently is going to be gone.

Splinterrents may bounce back, it's already got a function where you can set a minimum listing limit, all it needs is to adjust for seasons rentals I think, may only be down short term.

I am sure we will see A LOT of rebellion cards unfortunately!

This season rent idea I am unsure about. It means you get a load of DEC at the start and then fuck all every day after that? It depends how you define season I suppose.

I am sure we will see A LOT of rebellion cards unfortunately!

It is whether people will be willing to bite as hard as Chaos Legion. If they don't then it will be another downsize. I don't want them to go under for my own reasons.

I don't think it matters when you get the DEC as long as the rate is OK.

Biting is basically 100% dependent on another bull run, we just have to hope one coincides with some kind of next release, I doubt it'll be before Rebellion, which no one's going to to give a toss about.

They are likely going to set rebellion so it sells as many as possible and burns the rest. Personally I wish they would just undershoot demand instead of trying to meet it. They just keep shooting the secondary market in the head.

Yeah we need a tight print, nothing wrong with just a few million packs this time around! Like 3M or something!

3 million I think is on the nose. I'd structure it with another 600k for in chest rewards for the year but I also think they should only release 250k packs per month for a year and only sell them for the first two weeks of each month. So I want everything to change!

Well we the sensible are agreed, I'm expecting another 15M though.

I see this as another way for SL to reduce the amount of available DEC and the number of relisted rentals saving SL money and increasing the value of DEC by reducing supply.

A win-win for SL

For me it would be more palatable if the fee was 0.001 DEC or even 0.01 DEC.

However any change would cause Splinterrents to have to re-code their rental system to take into account the charges.

As far as I read they want to suspend the service they provide to monitor the market and recode the Splinterrents bot once they work out a new algorithm.

Personally, this could impact my Brawl capability (which was earning me SPS in Brawl Rewards) because my rental income subsidised the meagre Guild membership fees. I can afford maybe the next 5 brawls before I run out of DEC to pay those fees.

It really does seem that every time I establish myself to start gaining assets in this game, the rules of engagement are turned on their head and I have to start again.

I was only just getting over the SL idea of spending 10,000 DEC to influence Land rarity, this would also have done me over as I cannot afford the required DEC and would have effectively been robbed of an equal chance of getting rarer land plots when they are unveiled. Thankfully this was vetoed by the community.

Do you have any PLOT, didn't know you had bought any? I don't like any of these starter kits either, not a fan but I do have some DEC-B. It was voted in so we have to go along with it.

I thought that proposal had failed.

Yeah I have three plots, now most likely Commons.

I'm pulling away from SL, it's a bad investment, SL is tweaking the edges far too much and every time they do it weakens any chance of building up a decent collection.

I purchased Land on the understanding it was a relatively level playing field with a chance of getting rare even epic plots, totems are required with high-level cards and now 10.000 DEC. If others can buy their way to a better chance at Legendary's and Epics then those that can't afford it get the dross that's left.

It's no wonder they can't attract new players.

'It was voted in so we have to go along with it.'

I see what your saying, however, players don't have to live with it, they can vote with their feet as well as with SPS.

I thought that proposal had failed.

DEC-B passed and is live.

Yeah I have three plots, now most likely Commons.

Your chance is as good as anyone else. You may get a Keep or a Castle.

I am too invested to do this, but I get a decent return daily. The benefits of getting in during the Beta times, but I have dished out a lot on CL and Rift.

It still is a level playing field, the potions idea was vetoed by the SPS stakeholders. I voted no.

I'm trying to pull back from splex but peakmonsters has been terrible since they put in the premium pkm membership features probably 6 months ago. I have no idea where they are getting their rental prices anymore. I'll check what it says the low price is on peakmonsters and they'll give some random price that is way higher than whats actually on the market. So if you use their price, its very unlikely your card will get rented out. Now that it costs dec to reprice those, thats a real problem.

Not good, and there's going to be a lot of moaning going on in a couple of days. I will keep everything off until it settles.

I missed that news and sad to hear it. I have had a nice little income from Splinterrents for a while. I would hope they can find ways to make it work again. Doing all that manually just isn't viable, so I don't mind paying something for it.

It is a lot of work, I will have to see what transpires in the next few days. There's always SPLEX.

I didn't realize splinterrents had made a firm decision about closing up shop. I thought they were going to pause everything and wait to see what happens. That was the last thing I read anyway.

I didn't realize splinterrents had made a firm decision about closing up shop.

Maybe you are right, it looked to me as though too much work was involved to make things worthwhile. If it does re-emerge, I will be one happy dude.

I think they are just suspending it. I believe the catch was they all have full time jobs, so if the changes required are significant they probably will shutter it. If the changes are easy they will likely keep it going.

I will switch back in an instant, what a great service that was.

I decided to mostly withdraw from the rental market although I think the listing fee is a good thing generally for the DEC token. I have sold many lvl1 cards but I hope that wont be a mistake when land comes.

I know the are doing it for costs reasons, but it's a big inconvenience for us. I'm more pissed about the decision forcing SplinterRents to close more than anything else.

Hopefully it can come back when things stabilise more. But we don't know how the new rental dynamics will look like.

I hope so, going to miss it.

thank you for talking about so many splinterlands themes, yes indeed the Lily Shieldpaws card will be one of the best for being a dragon summoner,

about the land we still don't know anything, eager to know more
!PIZZA

Thank GOD that Gold Foil ALPHA Cards will be King on my Land Plots @slobberchops ...........

You should be rocking with those, they haven't been of much use lately unless you attend those tournaments which only the select few can, and are guaranteed a prize 😀

I hadnt realised that such a big change was a foot for rentals. I dont really have much cards, and they are all pretty low end, so I guess thats renting up the swaney for me ! Oh well - it nearly payed for itself !
It will be interesting to see how that pans out for Splinterlands then, because surely that was a large part of the attraction in respect of cards.

Make sure you remove them all by the end of the 6th March or you will start to accrue daily losses. This is going to be the case for many who don't bother keeping up with trending news. It will be a tough lesson for some.

Thanks for letting me know

I already decided to pull my cards off the splinterrents a day or two ago because of the rental changes but it's sad to see it go away. I haven't decided what to do about rentals for myself yet but I do plan on watching the next week or two to see what happens.

I will be cancelling all of mine later today. The change is scheduled for tomorrow during maintenance. I'm sure the topic will come up today in the Town Hall.

This makes me want to sell a bunch of cards, splinterrents was the only reason I didnt. I guess I will play for a while and see how it works out.

I'm noticing common themes with Hive/Splinterlands that are causing issues...

  1. Misguided generosity in situations that do not call for it.
  2. Power being held by too few.
  3. Marketing efforts being stifled by lack of confidence in product or inferior experience.
  4. AI/Bots and how they relate to decentralization.
  5. Decentralization and the lack of initiative/structural willingness to deliver upon this promise.
  6. No clear communications and guidelines.
  7. More dApps and use cases are needed.

It's odd to say but Splinterlands and Hive probably have more potential in ways that are not presented to us in their current form. The strength of Hive is the ability to build on it and the possibility of tribes with their own Level 2 tokens. The strength of Splinterlands is the willingness to let the NFTs be used for other projects, which is when true decentralization of the game is achieved. The blogs that get auto-voted and nobody cares to read are not what makes Hive special at all, it's a turn-off. The Splinterlands game is not mindblowing and can get very repetitive, it's not the secret sauce that takes the game to the next level.

Too much navel-gazing, too little building.
