3 Key Tips on "How to Lose" Gracefully in Splinterlands 😲

in Splinterlandsyesterday (edited)

Winning is easy. Losing is hard. It's a topic that's rarely discussed but why? Losing is something we all have to face everyday--whether we like it or not, and it sucks! So then, WHAT IS THE PROPER WAY TO LOSE IN SPLINTERLANDS? Over time I've learned 3 key tips that have helped me, that might help you as well!

HINT: Don't be this guy

First, some of you might ask: Why write an article on losing? Why not an article on winning? That's the more popular choice. But losing happens too. A lot actually. For every winner, there's a loser too. Perfect 1:1 ratio. And losing sucks way worse than winning, right? Winning is easy. You celebrate, you feel good, you're done. On the other hand, losing is way, way harder. Today I felt that in a brutal way. An epic 10-game losing streak put me in the worst mood. We've all been there, ready to throw the computer across the room after losing multiple battles in a row. HOW DO YOU HANDLE IT?

Second, "losing" so-to-speak in Splinterlands includes not only "losing" battles, but since Splinterlands is a Web3 game where players invest into the game ecosystem, sometimes "losing" can also mean losing money, losing value on your cards, your tokens, your whatever. There's no doubt, losing in a game like Splinterlands can hurt way more than just your pride. It can hurt you right in the wallet. HOW DO YOU HANDLE THAT?

Here are 3 tips that have greatly improved my ability to "handle losing" in splinterlands, and that have me setup (hopefully😅) for long-term success in the game over time:

1) Stay calm.

The first tip is the easiest said, but for some folks it truly is the hardest to actually do. If you've lost 10 games in a row like I did today, stay calm. If the price of your game assets drops, don't panic sell. Unless you've identified a flaw in your battle strats, or a flaw in the way you're allocating resources in the game, then just keep going. Losing streaks don't last forever and neither do bear markets. The wins will come eventually and quickly erase those losses from your memory.

2) Stop if you need to.

This is something I don't typically recommend, unless things are getting really bad. That's because I like to fight through tough times and losing streaks. If they're really, really bad though, like REALLY bad, then just step away from the game for a while. This might be like me today after losing 10 games just saying "now is not my moment 😁" and conserving energy and coming back to start fresh again later.

Similarly, if your financial situation (or your stomache) is not strong enough to take hits on a highly speculative investment like Splinterlands, then don't put your financial situation at risk. No one is forcing you to buy anything. If you don't have the gunpowder and/or the guts to ride it out, then step away. That might mean taking a break from buying anything for the game for a while, or it might mean fully exiting like some have gracefully done over the past couple of years. Either way, know when it's time to walk away.

3) Don't complain publicly--it's sad and pathetic.

Finally, whether it's a losing streak in ranked play, or whether you've lost a lot of money on the game, don't go onto splinterlands discord and complain about it. You will look really sad and pathetic, but despite that, no one will actually feel bad for you. Instead they will silently mock you and revel in your disfortune, so keep it to yourself loser! 🤣 We've all been there, but no one in the world wants to hear you complain about losing money, and no one in the game wants to listen to you complain about losing battles. It might hurt a little, but just keep it to yourself.

Today in fact there were some interesting posts in the splinterlands discord tavern from someone who has obviously become dissatisfied with the game. Like many people, this person has decided the reason they "lost" their investment in the game is because the game is not good, refusing to consider other factors, or the core problem which was their own decision to make a highly risky, highly speculative investment in this game. I added some screenshots below, but blurred the name to not try and shame anyone.

If this is you though, or if this is something you might think about posting, I would encourage you to think through this hypothetical with me first:

Splinterlands is like an event. Let's say, it's like a music festival. And you paid a big price for your "ticket" to get in. Now unfortunately, you think the concert is boring. There are way better concerts you could be seeing right now. What would a reasonable person do in that situation? Would they stay at the concert anyway, despite hating it, and complain to everyone around them about how bad the concert is? Or would they just leave like a normal, mentally healthy person? Don't be that crazy person. Just don't. Everyone hates that person. Not ony in Splinteralnds, but in life too 💪

To illustrate the type of behavior that should be absolutely avoided at all costs (unless you just don't care that other people think you're sad, pathetic and super annoying) I made this gif based on the discord discussion today. Enjoy!
