Every morning, a different object appeared on my neighbor's balcony - today, it was a gift basket made of wicker. The basket was covered with a decorative crochet cloth, and adorned with ribbons making it an eye catcher.
As I sat on my porch, sipping my warm chocolate drink and admiring the wicker gift basket, my mind began to drift back, recalling the mysterious items I had seen on her balcony in the last few days.
The previous day, it was a beautiful decorated wooden crate, or so. And inside it, I had caught a glimpse of something startling: pairs of fairly used children's shoes. Again, just a few days back, I had noticed some shopping bags on the same spot at the balcony. The items were things I couldn't overlook - cartons of children's milk, cartons of Golden Morn cereal, cornflakes, noodles, diapers, and soap. It was a peculiar assortment of groceries, and I couldn't help but wonder what was going on.
At the time, I hadn't thought much of it, but now, I felt even more curious. What was the story behind those shoes, groceries, and now, what could be inside this beautiful gift basket? Could it be another type of children's stuffs, or something else?
My curiosity got the better of me, and before you could say "Jack", my feet hastened to my neighbor's balcony. As I got there and lifted the decorative cloth a little, I was excited that I guessed it all right. Lying neatly folded in the basket, were a collection of children's clothing in various sizes and types.
Although I was excited about the discovery, but I was a bit taken aback, gobsmacked! I couldn't wrap my head around why these items were appearing on my neighbor's balcony. From the much I knew, she isn't married, neither does she have kids living with her, so it was baffling to see children's clothing, shoes and groceries appearing out of nowhere. Who could be sending these things to her, and what would she need them for?
In between the shock, I was tempted to knock on her door and probably see if I could find the answers to the mysterious items so my curious mind could be at rest. But then I thought, "I haven't even met her before. Wouldn't it be rude to pry?" "I think it's better to just let everything be", I concluded, as I turned, heading back to my apartment.
Just then, her front door opened, and she stepped outside. Seeing the basket, she smiled warmly, and bent over to pick it up. Her warm smile melted my heart,
and in that instant, I knew that fate had presented me with the perfect opportunity to get some answers.
Smiling, I approached her, introducing myself, and said "I hope you don't mind me asking. For some days now, I've been noticing some mysterious deliveries at your balcony. I'm really curious to know what they're about".
She smiled and invited me in. As we sat down, she shared a touchy story. Her passion for caring for homeless and motherless children had driven her to establish an orphanage home in the city. The items which seemed mysterious to me, were donations from kind-hearted individuals and partners in and outside the community.
This revelation opened my eyes to who my neighbor really was. I was deeply moved by her dedication and felt a sense of pride and admiration. In that moment, I knew I had found a kindred spirit - a like-minded individual who shared my passion. There and then, we forged a connection that would inspire me to support her remarkable work.
I was grateful that my curiosity led me to a good course, a newfound friendship, and a chance to make a difference.
