Finish The Tale #6 - The Unnecessary Call

"You don't know me, but I know you", the voice said before the call cut out.

I stared at my phone in my hand, trying to check who the caller might be, only to see that it was from a private number, which means the caller hid their identity. My heart started palpitating as fear gripped me.

"Who could the caller be? How did they get my number?", I wondered as I could hear the unspoken threat in their voice.

My palms became sweaty. I placed my phone carefully on the table, staring deeply at it. I held my head in my palms as worry washed over me.

"Whom have I offended?", I asked aloud to no one in particular.

I heard the sound of the door opening and my heart almost jumped out of my chest.

" What's the problem Honey?", My husband, who had just came in,asked looking at me worriedly.

I opened my mouth but I could barely speak. He quickly held me and I immediately felt safe in his warm embrace.

"What happened Honey?", he asked again. This time, I found my voice.

I narrated all that happened to him and my husband quickly took my phone to check and he saw that truly the caller hid their identity.

"Did you have any altercation with anyone?", My husband asked while still trying to keep me calm.

I shook my head " Not at all Baby".

"All I could guess was that the caller seems like a woman", I said and his interest was piqued.

"Don't you always have that auto record for calls on your phone", my husband asked and realization dawned on me.

I quickly checked through my phone and found the voice recording. I gave it to my husband who played it.

"This is very good, now there's only one thing left to do", my husband said as he stood up.

He led me to his car and we drove straight to the Police Station. We got there and my husband explained what had happened to an officer. I was called in to give my statement and with the voice recording, the Police swung into action.

My husband and I went back home and two days later, we were invited to the station. The Police had successfully traced the call and the name found was Mr Bankole.

"Does that name ring any bell to you?", the Officer in charge asked me.

"I think I recall that name. He's the one who fixed our damaged pipes" My husband responded to the officer.

" Yes, I recall that he came to fix the whole thing and I paid him afterwards. So why would he call me and with a private number at that? " I asked with confusion.

"I think we need to have a discussion with him. Thank you very much for helping us officer" My husband said as he shook hands with him and then we both left the station.

We drove to Mr Bankole's residence since we got it from the police. My husband knocked and luckily, he was at home. He welcomed us in and my husband went straight to the point.

"Mr Bankole, you came and fixed our damaged pipes two weeks ago. Are we still owing you your pay? " He asked

"No sir, your wife paid me in full. I have the transaction details sir" Mr Bankole replied.

"So why did you threaten my wife with a hidden caller ID?"

"I didn't make any calls to your wife sir. My phone has been at home because my wife's phone is bad. Let me ask her if she made any calls lately" Mr Bankole responded and went in to talk to his wife while we waited briefly in the sitting room.

A few minutes later, he came out looking sorrowful and pained. He explained that it was his wife that had made the call thinking that he was cheating on her and her jealousy took over. He also said that he had explained thoroughly that the call was simply work related but she still chooses to believe what she wants to.

My husband and I breathed a sigh of relief seeing that it was only a small matter, at least to us. We left after the issue was straightened out. I was quite glad that it was not a kidnapper or a stalker calling me because then, I wouldn't know what I'd do.
