¡Aventuras de médico rural!

Llegar hasta aquí no resultó fácil, sin embargo estoy consciente de que lo que sigue será aún más difícil. Y siempre tenemos esa capacidad de aguantar.

Este es mi primer año como médico profesionalmente, y decidí hacerlo en un área rural para adquirir una nueva experiencia, yo elegí irme a 30 minutos de mi casa, pero el destino decidió enviarme a 2 horas de camino. Una travesía sin igual que realmente me ayudará a desarrollar nuevas habilidades.

Getting this far was not easy, but I am aware that what follows will be even more difficult. And we always have that ability to endure.

This is my first year as a physician professionally, and I decided to do it in a rural area to gain a new experience, I chose to go 30 minutes away from home, but fate decided to send me 2 hours away. An unparalleled journey that will really help me develop new skills.

A 75km de mi casa se encuentra el lugar en donde voy a pasar una buena parte de mis días de éste año, y además donde voy a estrenarme como médico rural. Un pueblito llamado Cazorla, parte del Estado Guárico, una zona totalmente agropecuaria y donde se puede ver una población carente de atención a la salud.

75km from my home is the place where I am going to spend a good part of my days this year, and also where I am going to make my debut as a rural doctor. A small town called Cazorla, part of the State of Guárico, a totally agricultural area and where you can see a population lacking in health care.

Está provincia de aproximadamente 13.000 habitantes será nuestro lugar de trabajo por los próximos meses, y la travesía para llegar aquí es un poco complicada, porque para esta zona no hay transporte como tal, si no que algunas personas disponen sus carros ocasionalmente para trasladar a quienes ameriten ir a este lugar pero son muy pocos, pero por lo general toca irse en "colas" es decir, que uno espera en la vía a ver si alguna persona que va hacia el pueblo accede a llevarte.

Esto nos lleva entre 1-2hs de espera, por carretera de asfalto y una parte de tierra. 2 horas de camino entre paisaje y paisaje que resulta agradable a la vista y hace el camino más agradable.

This province of approximately 13,000 inhabitants will be our place of work for the next few months, and the journey to get here is a bit complicated, because for this area there is no transportation as such, but some people have their cars occasionally to move those who need to go to this place but they are very few, but usually you have to go in "queues" that is, you wait on the road to see if someone who goes to the village agrees to take you.

This takes us between 1-2hs of waiting, on asphalt road and a part of dirt road. 2 hours of road between landscape and landscape that is pleasing to the eye and makes the road more enjoyable.

Primero agarramos un transporte desde San Fernando de Apure hasta Guayabal, que duró aproximadamente 30 minutos, esta por ser una región más poblada es muy rápido conseguir transporte y el costo no es muy alto, al llegar a Guayabal aproximadamente a las 8am estuvimos esperando hasta las 10am un carro para el pueblo y nada, fue imposible a pesar de ser lunes. Afortunadamente, después de esperar a las 3pm nos canalizaron una "cola" muy buena, donde mi colega y yo íbamos muy cómodas. Llegamos al pueblo a las 5pm.

First we took a transport from San Fernando de Apure to Guayabal, which took about 30 minutes, this being a more populated region is very fast to get transportation and the cost is not very high, arriving at Guayabal at about 8am we were waiting until 10am for a car to the town and nothing, it was impossible despite being Monday. Fortunately, after waiting at 3pm we got a very good "queue", where my colleague and I were very comfortable. We arrived in town at 5pm.

Fue una primera experiencia bastante sorprendente, a pesar de algunos factores que resultaron bastante incómodos en relación a infraestructura del centro de salud y a falta de insumos. Sin embargo, al final resultó ser una experiencia interesante pues vivimos en una Venezuela en donde hacemos medicina con lo que podemos y esto nos mantiene constantemente a prueba, generando cierto temor por no cometer errores, pero siempre dispuestos a aliviar el malestar de quien acude a nosotros por alguna necesidad.

It was a quite surprising first experience, despite some factors that were quite uncomfortable in relation to the infrastructure of the health center and the lack of supplies. However, in the end it turned out to be an interesting experience because we live in a Venezuela where we do medicine with what we can and this keeps us constantly tested, generating some fear for not making mistakes, but always ready to alleviate the discomfort of those who come to us for any need.

Ser medico rural en estos tiempos en nuestro país no es nada sencillo, y quizas por esta razon muchos optan por irse por lo tradicional y lo seguro al hacer su articulo 8, que es en un centro hospitalario o cumplirlo en un ambulatorio de la red urbana. Y es entendible, y justificable, sin embargo yo aposté esta vez por una experiencia que estoy segura será enrriquecedora para toda mi carrera.

Aqui desde nuestro rincon en Cazorla, hacemos lo que podemos como médicos siempre teniendo presente que el que no vive para servir, no sirve para vivir.

Being a rural doctor in these times in our country is not easy, and perhaps for this reason many choose to go for the traditional and safe way to do their article 8, which is in a hospital center or fulfill it in an ambulatory of the urban network. And it is understandable, and justifiable, however I bet this time for an experience that I am sure will be enriching for my entire career.

Here from our corner in Cazorla, we do what we can as doctors always keeping in mind that he who does not live to serve, is not good to live.
