El drenaje postural es un tipo de fisioterapia respiratoria que ayuda a tratar los problemas del aparato respiratorio con respecto al exceso de mucosidad que se puede encontrar adherida a los campos pulmonares.

En el drenaje postural se debe de adaptar una posición que permita liberar los líquidos de los pulmones a través de gravedad y percusiones. Esto a su vez puede permitir el tratar o prevenir infecciones del tracto respiratorio y también facilita la respiración al ser expulsadas las secreciones.

La forma en que se realizará el drenaje postural depende mucho de la condición que esté presentando el paciente, ésta se debe realizar bajo vigilancia y orden médica, puede ser realizada por el fisioterapeuta, médico o personal de enfermería.

El drenaje postural debe de tomar un tiempo de 5 a 7 minutos en cada área del pecho para que pueda funcionar correctamente, lo ideal es indicarle a la persona al momento de terminar la fisioterapia que debe de tomar aire de forma profunda y toser.

El drenaje postural se emplea con mayor frecuencia en niños debido a que a estos se les dificulta liberar las secreciones por sí mismos, en la actualidad se suele emplear como un cuidado de enfermería en pacientes con diagnostico positivo de COVID.
