Siempre hemos tenido una conexión poderosa con el mar. Comprendo lo misterioso y romántico que puede llegar a ser, pero va más allá. En mi juventud, los conceptos marinos fueron cimentados con las obras literarias Moby Dick y La isla del Tesoro entre muchas otras. Era un ávido lector pero me atraían las novelas o historias que tuvieran al mar como parte de su marco de desarrollo. Eso y haber aprendido a nadar desde muy joven, además de los viajes frecuentes a las playas de nuestro país, lograron marcar una huella profunda en mi conexión con el mar.
We have always had a powerful connection with the sea. I understand how mysterious and romantic it can be, but it goes beyond that. In my youth, marine concepts were grounded in the literary works Moby Dick and Treasure Island among many others. I was an avid reader but was drawn to novels or stories that had the sea as part of their framework. That and having learned to swim at a very young age, in addition to frequent trips to the beaches of our country, made a deep impression on my connection with the sea.
Es así como en cada uno de los viajes realizados por este servidor, hemos querido aprovechar las oportunidades que se nos brindan para conectar con el mar. Desde partidas de pesca en Florida, pasando por largos paseos en ferry por las costas de los países visitados hasta un largo paseo en un velero por la bahía de Bellingham en el estado de Washington. Cuando nuestro anfitrión preguntó si deseábamos pasar una noche en velero como experiencia nos ganó la curiosidad por como sería aquello y aceptamos sin rechistar.
This is how in each of the trips made by this server, we have wanted to take advantage of the opportunities offered to us to connect with the sea. From fishing trips in Florida to long ferry rides along the coasts of the countries visited, to a long sailboat ride on Bellingham Bay in Washington State. When our host asked if we would like to spend a night on a sailboat as an experience, we were curious about what it would be like and accepted without any complaints.
Hecha la invitación nos dispusimos a preparar todo. Una de las cosas que aprendimos de la experiencia es el largo proceso de preparación de un viaje para pasar noches en el mar. Muchos no lo sabemos, porque imaginamos que nada puede ser tan pesado o porque la tripulación se encarga de todo. Pero hay mucho trabajo detrás. Desde preparar toda la logística de alimentos y líquidos a consumir, hasta el chequeo de las sogas, motor, baterías y un sinnúmero de inspecciones a la embarcación para partir. Nos llevó casi ocho horas tener listo todo para pasar solo una noche en la embarcación.
Once the invitation was extended, we set out to prepare everything. One of the things we learned from the experience is the long process of preparing for a trip to spend nights at sea. Many of us don't know it, because we imagine that nothing can be that heavy or because the crew takes care of everything. But there is a lot of work behind it, from preparing all the logistics of food and liquids to be consumed to checking the ropes, engine, batteries, and countless inspections of the boat to leave. It took us almost eight hours to get everything ready to spend only one night on the boat.

Es vital poner atención porque al igual que un avión, son los momentos más propensos a tener accidentes (la salida o la entrada). Afortunadamente salvamos el puerto y salimos a mar abierto. Una suave brisa empujaba las velas y la actividad en el velero era intensa. Teníamos que ayudar al capitán de la nave con los cabos y las sogas para orientar el velero. Es mucho menos apacible de lo que creíamos. Por supuesto que hay momentos de sosiego y es cuando aprovechas para tomar imágenes.
Buoys and signs mark the average depths and passages of the ships. It is vital to pay attention because just like an airplane, these are the most accident-prone moments (the exit or the entrance). Fortunately, we saved the harbor and headed out to the open sea. A gentle breeze pushed the sails and the activity on the sailboat was intense. We had to help the ship's captain with the lines and ropes to guide the sailboat. It is much less peaceful than we thought it would be. Of course, there are quiet moments and that's when you take advantage of it to take pictures.
Finalmente llegamos a destino: Isla Sucia. Un lugar que forma parte de una reserva natural enorme. Un conjunto de islas que son el paso natural de manadas de orcas y ballenas cuando se dirigen o vienen del sur luego de pasar el invierno. Las aguas de la bahía donde atracamos son tranquilas. Una señora que navegaba sola nos capturó el cabo y ayudó atracar el velero en el muelle. Una vez allí, descargamos la nave para almorzar en las mesas del parque. Terminado el almuerzo nos dispusimos a caminar por la isla para conocerla.
We finally arrived at our destination: Isla Sucia. A place that is part of a huge natural reserve. A group of islands that are the natural passage of herds of orcas and whales when they come or go from the south after spending the winter. The waters of the bay where we docked are calm. A lady sailing alone captured the line for us and helped to dock the sailboat at the pier. Once there, we unloaded the ship for lunch at the tables in the park. After lunch, we set out to walk around the island to get to know it.
Una de las cosas increíbles del ambiente natural es que puedes conseguir sitios donde el silencio es aterradoramente implícito. En Isla Sucia esto es evidente porque oyes hasta el proceso respiratorio de cualquier persona que ande cerca de tí. Es algo difícil de explicar si no se vive. El olor de los pinos también era algo imperecedero. La mezcla de pertinaz llovizna con la tierra y los árboles traía a mi mente el olor a musgo navideño, ese con el cual adornamos los pesebres en Venezuela. Una vez que dimos la vuelta a la isla, nos dispusimos hacer una fogata. Están permitidas siempre que se tome las medidas para disfrutarlas y no dañar el ambiente.
One of the amazing things about the natural environment is that you can get places where silence is frighteningly implicit. In Isla Sucia this is evident because you hear even the breathing process of anyone who walks near you. It's hard to explain if you don't live it. The smell of the pine trees was also something everlasting. The mixture of stubborn drizzle with the earth and the trees brought to my mind the smell of Christmas moss, the one with which we decorate the nativity scenes in Venezuela. Nos fuimos a dormir al velero cerca de la medianoche. El frío era bestial y aún con edredones de lana, no pudimos conciliar el sueño porque se colaba la temperatura exterior en el camarote. Creo que nos dormimos cerca de la una de la mañana, pero a las seis y media me despertó las ganas de orinar. Hice tan poco ruido como pude e imitando a un contorsionista, hicimos una proeza para salir de cama sin despertar a los acompañantes de cuarto. Pero cometí un grave error al salir. No me calcé. Y el contacto de mi pie desnudo con el muelle casi me hizo congelar. Pero no había vuelta atrás, allí mismo y sin que nadie viera descargué mi atolondrada vejiga.
We went to sleep on the sailboat around midnight. It was cold and even with wool comforters, we could not fall asleep because the outside temperature was seeping into the cabin. I think we fell asleep around one in the morning, but at half past six, I was awakened by the urge to urinate. I made as little noise as I could and imitating a contortionist, we performed a feat to get out of bed without waking the roommates. But I made a serious mistake getting out. I didn't put on my shoes. And the contact of my bare foot with the spring almost made me freeze. But there was no turning back, right there and unseen I unloaded my giddy bladder.
Jugamos cartas luego del desayuno hasta que hizo el tiempo de regresar. La navegación de vuelta fue muy accidentada. Las aguas del mar embravecido castigaron la nave y nos entregó una lección de humildad. El mar, en su sabiduría no perdona a quienes creen estar en control. We played cards after breakfast until it was time to return. The return trip was very rough. The rough seas punished the ship and gave us a lesson in humility. The sea, in its wisdom, does not forgive those who think they are in control. You can only manage the variables but the ocean is in charge and it made it clear that morning. We maneuvered as best we could give our inexperience, but we made it safely to port. The bumpy ride back did not change our perspective: Isla Sucia is a magical place to visit. See you later.

Buenas tardes Fermiónico, que delicia de texto y material para mi imaginación.
Nunca navegué, por lo que la lectura como como el proceso y lo que se siente estar en un barco velero y navegar me fue fascinante. Es verdad uno puede controlar algunas variables pero el océano manda.
En cuanto a la isla y escuchar el respirar es mágico, escuchar el propio latido y darse cuanta de la grandiosidad del universo y de la vida. Que maravilla de sensaciones.
Las fotografías son de ensueño, sobre todo las del agua. Amo el mar, es una tracción fuerte en mí y que decirte que no se nadar. Tal vez algún día, pero no pierdo oportunidad de sentir el agua, así sea pisando el fondo. La inmensidad del todo.
