La historia de los cultos hacia la niña blanca o santa muerte, como es más conocida tiene un largo proceso de evolución. El culto a la muerte se remonta a 1795, cuando los lugareños adoraban un esqueleto que Llamaron la muerte en un pequeño pueblo del centro de México, y hubo testimonios de que este culto ha estado oculto durante los últimos dos siglos.
Leyendas populares que debían transmitir de boca en boca indican que este culto nació alrededor de la década de 1960. En Catemaco, Veracruz, México. Se dice que un lugareño vio una figura muerta pintada en un tablero desde su cabaña. Fue a pedirle al sacerdote local que verificara y canonizara el ícono, pero se negó rotundamente, diciendo que era una ceremonia satanista.

En la calle Alfarería del barrio de Tepito, en la Ciudad de México, se encuentra el templo que recibe diariamente a los fieles de “la niña blanca”, que es otro nombre con el que se le conoce a la Santa Muerte. Algunos llegan de rodillas, otros con peticiones y algunos más, con agradecimientos. Todos llevan una pequeña ofrenda de cigarros, dulces o licor.
