Navidades amargas
Aconteció que llegó diciembre y la Navidad se impuso como única alegría, pero nuevamente el burro sintió envidia del gato, del perro, del loro y de todos los animales que recibían su porción de afecto extra en estas fechas; así que se le ocurrió robarse la Navidad, pero no precisamente entrando por las chimeneas a medianoche para llevarse el pavo, los regalos y el árbol con sus luces y bambalinas.
El burro no estaba para cuentos de Grinch ni conocía la historia y donde vivía las chozas eran pobres, sin pavo ni arbolitos con bambalinas, sin regalos para los niños; de modo que, si quería cortarles el rabo y las orejas a las festividades de diciembre, debía estar claro que la navidad no es solamente el derroche material, que es otra cosa, que tiene que ver con el espíritu que te embarga y te hace festejar a pesar de la pobreza.
Lo primero que hizo fue abrirles el chiquero a los cochinos; los convenció de evitar el rolazo, de salvar su tocino, de verse ardiendo en el caldero como chicharrón, así que en la mañana de aquel día no había carne para el festejo porque lo mismo ocurrió con las gallinas, las ovejas y el torito que quedaba en casa; todos habían desaparecidos.
La siguiente mañana amanecieron sin gatos ni perros ni loros; con el cuento de que él sabía dónde estaban los demás animales, el burro los convenció de que fueran a por ellos y cuando llegaron donde estaban les dijo a los otros, en secreto, que el perro y compañía habían venido a llevarlos al matadero; así que los supuestos verdugos fueron apresados, amordazados y mantenidos en cautiverio.
La tercera noche se perdieron los niños. Aprovechando el descuido de los padres, el burro se ofreció a echarles una colita a los hermanos, Juan y José, y los llevó lejos para que no regresaran en dos días, mientras pasaba la Navidad.
Con el espíritu nublado de tristeza, los dueños del burro no tenían ánimo para festejar y por eso, el animal estaba de lo más contento. Pero viendo la familia la alegría inusual del asno, y pareciéndole descortesía que alguien cercano, querido y respetado se comportara imprudentemente ante tan triste situación, decidieron hacer trueque con él y recibieron un lechón, cinco gallinas, dos cabras y un becerro.
Con la soga al cuello se llevaron al burro para donde los vecinos que lo necesitan para usarlo de carguero; necesitaban traer de lejos la carne para las hallacas, la leña para el fogón, las consolas para la música y a los invitados de honor.
De camino hacia su primera diligencia, al burro le tocó devolverse con su nuevo amo que había encontrado a los niños perdidos, los llevaron a casa y allá el asno vio que estaban todos los animales, porque el perro había descubierto la treta del cuadrúpedo y los convenció a todos de que regresaran a casa.
Nunca olvidaremos que esas fueron las navidades más amargas que vivió el burro.
Bitter Christmas
It happened that December arrived and Christmas was imposed as the only joy, but again the donkey felt envious of the cat, the dog, the parrot and all the animals that received their portion of extra affection on these dates; so it occurred to him to steal Christmas, but not exactly entering through the chimneys at midnight to take the turkey, the gifts and the tree with its lights and sconces.
The donkey was not in the mood for Grinch stories, nor did he know the story, and where he lived the huts were poor, without turkey or trees with lights and lights, without presents for the children; so, if he wanted to cut off their tails and ears to the December festivities, he had to be clear that Christmas is not only the material waste, which is something else, it has to do with the spirit that fills you and makes you celebrate in spite of poverty.
The first thing he did was to open the pigs' sty; he convinced them to avoid death, to save the bacon, to see them burning in the cauldron like pork rinds, so that in the morning of that day there was no meat for the feast because the same thing happened to the chickens, the sheep and the only bull left in the house; they had all disappeared.
The next morning dawned without cats, dogs or parrots; with the story that he knew where the other animals were, the donkey convinced them to go and look for them and when they arrived where they were he told the others, on the sly, that the dog and company had come to take them to the slaughterhouse; so the supposed executioners were seized, gagged and kept in captivity.
On the third night the children were lost. Taking advantage of the parents' carelessness, the donkey offered to give the brothers, John and Joseph, a little tail and took them away so that they would not return for two days, while Christmas was passing.
With their spirits clouded by sadness, the donkey's owners were in no mood for celebrations, so the animal was in the most joyful mood. But the family, seeing the donkey's unusual joy, and finding it rude that someone near, dear and respected should behave unwisely in such a sad situation, decided to barter with him and received a piglet, five hens, two goats and a calf.
With a rope around his neck they took the donkey to the neighbors who needed him to use him as a loader; they needed to bring from far away the meat for the hallacas, the wood for the bonfire, the consoles for the music and the guests of honor.
On the way to his first stagecoach, the donkey had to return with his new master who had found the lost children, they took them home and there the donkey saw that all the animals were there, because the dog had discovered the trick of the quadruped and convinced them all to return home.
We will never forget that this was the most bitter Christmas the donkey ever experienced.
