The supply of a token on exchanges is a parameter that is usually closely monitored. The top coins, Bitcoin, Ethereum are especially closely monitored when it comes to the supply on exchanges. What about HIVE?
What is the share of the HIVE supply held on exchanges? What is the trend is it going up or down? How has deposited/withdraw the most? Let’s take a look!
Here we will be looking at the following:
- Net deposits VS withdrawals
- HIVE balance on exchanges
- Top accounts that deposited to exchanges
- Top accounts that withdraw from exchanges
- Top exchanges balance
- Upbit and Binance balance
Exchanges taken in the analysis: Upbit, Binance, Bithumb, Hive Engine, Huobi, Gate.io, MEXC, CoinEX and Indodax. There are few more exchanges but the volume there is quite low.
Net Daily Deposits and Withdrawals from Exchanges
When we add the deposits and withdrawals on a daily basis the chart looks like this.
Note: Transfers between exchanges accounts are excluded from the data above.
The most noticeable moves here as well are back in 2021, when first there was a lot of withdrawals and then deposits to exchange. Since then, we ca see some spikes up and down, but much smaller moves. Most of the time there is more daily deposits then withdrawals.
Monthly Net Deposits VS Withdrawals
When we add the deposits and withdrawals on a monthly basis the chart looks like this.
A clearer representation here.
Again, the volatility back from 2021 is noticeable here as well. This is because of the HBD movements at the time, when HBD increased to above its peg, and a lot of HIVE was withdrawn from exchanges and converted to HBD.
When we zoom in 2023-2024 we get this:
In 2023, the year started with January having more HIVE withdrawn from exchanges then deposited, a total of -1.5M HIVE, then a jump in March to 6M and a drop to -1M in April. In the following period all the months have been in positive with more HIVE deposited to exchanges each month.
On average in the last year there have been 2.5M HIVE deposited on exchanges each month.
HIVE Balance on Exchanges
What is the amount of HIVE on exchanges?
Here is the chart.
As we can see the overall HIVE balance on exchanges has been growing, with some dips along the way. The biggest dip happened back in September 2021, when there was a lot of HIVE converted to HBD due to the increase in the HBD price. A steady growth since then with occasional small dips.
The current supply for HIVE on exchanges is at 190M HIVE. Back in 2020 this number was around 120M HIVE, a total of 70M HIVE has been added on exchanges in a four year period. In 2024 alone the amount of HIVE on exchanges increased from 165M to 190M, adding 25M, with three more months to go.
When we plot the balance on the exchanges against the total HIVE supply, we get this.
HIVE share on exchanges in percent %.
From the chart above we can say that the HIVE balance on exchanges has been growing both in absolute and in relative terms.
We are now at 42% of all the HIVE on exchanges. This is an all-time high when it comes to the share of HIVE on exchanges. For comparison the Bitcoin share on exchanges is now around 10%.
The top exchanges that hold HIVE are the following:
Upbit is absolutely dominant with 132M HIVE. On the second spot is Binance with 40M, followed by Bithumb. Hive Engine on the fourth place now with 6M HIVE.
Upbit and Binance have been the major two exchanges for HIVE for years now. Bittrex was a big exchange back in the days, but it stopped operating.
Upbit
When we take a closer look to Upbit we have this chart:
It has been growing in most of the period, especially back in 2021. In the last year there was a decline in the amount of HIVE on Upbit, in the first half of 2024, but in the last month it has been growing again. A total of 132M HIVE is now on Upbit!
Binance
The Binance chart looks like this:
A more devirse trend here. An increase in the beginning, then a drop and somewhat sideactin in the last few years, up to 2023, when at the end of the year the and the beginning of 2024 the amount of HIVE on Biance started growing again and reached 40M HIVE in June 2024, where it has been for the last few months.
Here is the chart for Upbit VS Binance:
At first, four years ago, these two were close, but then Upbit kept on growing while Binance dropped a bit. In the last period Upbit has slowed down with some ups and downs , while Binance has increased a bit. Still a big gap between these two, with 90M HIVE more on Upbit then Binance, a 132M to 40M. Upbit is a real risk for HIVE with the number of tokens there.
Top Accounts that Deposited to Exchanges in 2024
Who has transferred the most funds to exchanges? Here is the chart for 2024.
The @exchangeme account is on the top here with 7M HIVE deposited to exchanges in 2024. I guess this is some helper service, might even be a Binance account, because all the transfers are redirected to Binance. Next is @sl-swap, that is a Splinterlands account.
Note that this is a net HIVE deposited to exchanges, with both, deposits and withdrawals taken into account.
Top Accounts that Withdrawn from Exchanges in 2024
Who has withdrawn the most funds from exchanges? Here is the chart for 2024.
The @sps.dao is the number one account withdrawing HIVE from exchanges. This is the Splinterlands DAO account, and it has been buying and staking HIVE in the last period in sort of mutual cooperation with the chain to support its DHF proposal.
@lazy-panda is on the second spot here with 1.6M HIVE. This account is know for its HBD holdings, so the guess is that a lot of this HIVE was converted to HBD. Next is a @trc20 account and then @danieljusto.
All the best
@dalz
Of these 190M on exchanges, how many do you think are in ownership of the exchanges themselves? Or are almost all customer money?
Cant realy tell ... in theory it should be customers money
Why are you being heavily down voted?
I am being downvoted Because I sold all my Hive at the top …. And bought Bitcoin.
Sounds like a fair trade. One train for another better option. Those fees however will forever increase as the price gets higher. Hope you got enough to cover it all.
When Bitcoin hits $1,000,000,000 USD I will probably swap some back into Hive. And Blurt. 😂
Gezzz I honestly wasn't expecting it to be that high at all. I thought maybe 15%-20%. At some point it becomes a security risk again does it not like the steemit days?
that's not a good sign, it means big whales are moving their funds to exchanges and they are waiting for this bull run to cash out.
Looks like the whales are selling $1,000,000 a day at the moment.
Do we know how much of the exchange is buying HIVE?
I guess the spike in the withdrawal of hive early 2023 was a result of bearish market sentiments at the time. But it's good to see that more is currently being deposited than withdrawn and this could very possibly have a good impact on the hive ecosystem. I hope more exchanges get to list hive. Thanks for the update.
Upbit is holding such a big amount of hive and it must be user's fund. I doubt if this is kept there to sell when bull run starts else it's good if this amount is powered up.
The number of Hive on exchanges is increasing. The amount of Hive has been held the most in Upbit exchange. Thanks for sharing very important information
It would be much better if the amount of Hive on exchanges decreased
I'm surprised that Hive has such a high percentage of exchanges. What could be the reason for this?
People selling Hive for other crypto or fiat
I think at this point, hive needs more exchanges

Where does the Hive going to Upbit come from when most transfers from Hive (on chain) went to Binance?
The only sonewhat positive trend here is that Binance's share has been growing relatively to Upbit.
Its mostly arbitradges from Binance and Bithumb:
Have in mind the numbers from Binance are not NET, becouse they can use different accounts for deposits/withdrawals.
The drop on Upbit in June is due to panic regarding the new Korean altcoin regulations - there were rumours of delistings, so a lot of Hive was moved to Binance.
Yea I remember that, it was one of the reasons for the drop in the Hive price as well, from 30c to 20c
