Like you, I don't know much at all about art. I remember reading about van Gogh and that he cut off his own ear and was mentally unwell but don't remember much else about him. He did have a distinct way of painting though and I often wonder if that is how his mind would see the world around him.

It was fascinating seeing so many of his paintings up close and personal. And although I know nothing about art and painting I did notice differences in how he applied the strokes between some paintings.
I think his mental illness must have been quite bad and it seems the last two years of his life was particularly troubled eventually leading to him committing suicide
