Too many variable factors have to come together, and most of them are beyond our control. Especially during or just after the war, when small everyday problems become a fight for life. Such situations only show that love does exist, but it is not only a feeling, but also a calculation of advantages and disadvantages.
Rainbow takes place in just such a place. Times are not friendly either. The action of the anime begins in 1955, 10 years after Japan signed the surrender. Since Japan was the attacker during WWII, the Americans treat them only slightly better than vermin during the occupation. In addition, the entire country is in ruins and its citizens earn little money. Families are also devastated - many men died in the war, and the surviving women must find rich husbands to whom they will be nice and humble. This is in a situation where women are lucky, because when they don't have it, they have to work like men or prostitute themselves.
The heroes of the story are a group of orphans who were arrested for seriously breaking the law. Their leader and guide was Mario Minakami, the most mature boy from this group. All 6 of them were placed in a cell with Rokurouta Sakuragi - a former boxer who is several years older. At first, the boys don't like each other, but after some time they develop a brotherly bond. Especially between Mario and Sakuragi. The relationship and shared misery help them survive hell. A sadistic guard who cures his frustrations by beating others and an equally evil doctor who is a rapist.
When the boys left the orphanage, they realized that this was actually one of the first stages of their problems. Despite the difficulties they face, they try to live a normal life. Everything changes when Sakuragi dies. The boys lose their brother and mentor at the same time, and Setsuko Koike, a nurse working in an orphanage, the love of their life. Although all six of them treated Sakuragi like a brother, it cannot be denied that Mario suffers the most. Not because he's some narcissist or anything like that. The boxer gave him responsibility for the rest. If you have ever experienced this feeling, e.g. your parents decided that you were mature enough to take care of a younger sibling or take responsibility for something valuable, then you know what I am talking about. Soon after, a new feeling begins to develop between Mario and the nurse. Mario wants to fulfill the promise he made to his brother, and at the same time, let's face it, Setsuko is a beautiful girl, so the hormones are working. It's similar in her case - she lacks true feeling, she sees in Mario the same thing as Sakuragi, but from a different angle and in a different way.
Unfortunately, they also do not find a happy ending to their story. Setsuko learns that her father's factory is on the verge of bankruptcy. However, there is a chance for salvation - the daughter must marry a wealthy businessman. Therefore, he must reject his new love. I didn't want to spoil the narrative in the earlier paragraph, so I'll say it here. Although Mario is similar to his brother, he was not Setsuko's first choice. I don't deny her feelings, they are genuine. However, even if she was given the choice, she would never feel the same way about him. Sure, feelings change over the years, you can get used to new circumstances, but it almost always ends with a denture. It's neither bad nor good, it's just how feelings work. Perhaps she would be able to abandon her duty to her parents if it were about first love. However, Mario was in a worse position. His chosen one had already experienced heartbreak once and realized that her world had not collapsed. Yes, it will never return to its original state, but having an assured future, it is easier to pretend that everything is ok. You can delude yourself that everything will be fine, but love at its core is not based only on feelings or the durability of relationships. However, money is important, as it will ensure adequate comfort of life and safety.
It's just the way it is. Rainbow shows the sad injustice of life, but not only that. We see that you can try to achieve success and some people succeed. You just have to strive for it and be lucky.

Wielu ludzi twierdzi, że miłość jest bezwarunkowa, czysta i nigdy nie jest tak źle, by było beznadziejnie. "Najważniejsze, że mamy siebie", jak to mówią. Szczególni niedoświadczeni, naiwni lub ludzie, którzy przeżyli traumę (lub wynieśli ze swojego dzieciństwa złe wzorce ws. budowy relacji, radzenia sobie z emocjami, współpracą) są na to podatni. Nie twierdzę, że to niemożliwe, bo zdarza się, ale jest to idealna sytuacja. A idealne i bardzo dobre sytuacje, rzadko się zdarzają. Zbyt wiele zmiennych czynników musi się zgrać, a na większość nie mamy wpływu. Zwłaszcza w trakcie wojny lub tuż po niej, gdy niewielkie problemy dnia codziennego, urastają do rangi walki o życie. Takie sytuacje jedynie pokazują, że miłość, owszem, istnieje, ale nie jest to jedynie uczucie, ale też kalkulacja wad i zalet.
Rainbow dzieje się właśnie w takim miejscu. Czasy też nie są przyjazne. Akcja anime rozpoczyna się w 1955 roku, 10 lat po tym jak Japonia podpisała kapitulację. Jako, że Japonia była napastnikiem podczas 2WŚ, Amerykanie traktują ich podczas okupacji tylko trochę lepiej niż robactwo. Do tego całe państwo jest w ruinie, a jego obywatele zarabiają niewiele pieniędzy. Rodziny również są zdewastowane - mnóstwo mężczyzn zginęło na wojnie, kobiety pozostałe przy życiu muszą znaleźć sobie bogatych mężów, wobec których będą miłe i pokorne. To w sytuacji, gdy kobiety mają szczęście, bo gdy go nie mają, muszą harować jak mężczyźni lub się prostytuować.
Bohaterami opowieści jest grupa sierot, która została aresztowana z powodu poważnego złamania prawa. Ich liderem, a zarazem przewodnikiem został Mario Minakami, najdojrzalszy chłopak z tej paczki. Cała 6 trafiła do celi z Rokuroutę Sakuragi - byłym bokserem, który jest starszy o kilka lat. Chłopcy początkowo nie przepadają za sobą, ale po pewnym czasie nawiązuje się między nimi braterska więź. Zwłaszcza między Mario, a Sakuragim. Relacja i wspólne przeżywanie niedoli, pomagają im przetrwać piekło. Sadystycznego strażnika, który leczy swoje frustracje przez bicie innych oraz równie złego lekarza będącego gwałcicielem.
Gdy chłopcy opuścili dom dziecka, zrozumieli że to był tak naprawdę jeden z pierwszych etapów ich problemów. Mimo piętrzących się przed nimi trudności, próbują żyć normalnie. Wszystko ulega zmianie, gdy Sakuragi zginął. Chłopcy tracą swojego brata i mentora jednocześnie, a Setsuko Koike, pielęgniarka pracująca w domu dziecka, miłość swojego życia. Choć cała szóstka traktowała Sakuragiego niczym brata, to nie da się ukryć, że najmocniej cierpi Mario. Nie dlatego, że jest jakimś narcyzem, czy coś w tym stylu. Bokser przekazał mu odpowiedzialność za resztę. Jeżeli kiedyś doświadczyliście tego uczucia, np. rodzice uznali, że jesteście dostatecznie dojrzali, by zająć się młodszym rodzeństwem lub wziąć odpowiedzialność za coś cennego, to wiecie o czym mówię. Niedługo po tym między Mario, a pielęgniarką zaczyna kiełkować nowe uczucie. Mario chce spełnić obietnicę złożoną bratu, a jednocześnie, co tu ukrywać, Setsuko to piękna dziewczyna, więc hormony działają. W jej przypadku jest podobnie - brakuje jej prawdziwego uczucia, widzi w Mario to samo, co Sakuragi, ale od innej strony i w inny sposób.
Niestety i oni nie natrafiają na szczęśliwe zakończenie swojego wątku. Setsuko dowiaduje się, że fabryka jej ojca, jest na skraju bankructwa. Jest jednak szansa na ratunek, córka musi wyjść za bogatego biznesmena. W związku z tym musi odrzucić swoją nową miłość. Nie chciałem psuć narracji we wcześniejszym akapicie, więc powiem to tutaj. Choć Mario jest podobny do swojego brata, to nie był pierwszym wyborem Setsuko. Nie neguję jej uczuć, są autentyczne. Jednakże nawet gdyby dostała możliwość wyboru, to nigdy nie zapała do niego takim samym uczuciem. Jasne, uczucia zmieniają się przez lata, można się przyzwyczaić do nowych okoliczności, ale prawie zawsze kończy się jako proteza. Nie jest to ani złe ani dobre, tak po prostu działają uczucia. Być może byłaby w stanie porzucić obowiązek wobec rodziców, gdyby chodziło o pierwszą miłość. Mario był jednak w gorszej pozycji. Jego wybranka już raz doświadczyła złamanego serca i zrozumiała, że jej świat się nie załamał. Owszem, nigdy nie wróci do pierwotnego stanu, ale mając zapewnioną przyszłość, łatwiej jest udawać, że wszystko jest ok. Można się łudzić, że wszystko będzie dobrze, ale miłość u swoich podstaw nie opiera się jedynie na uczuciu lub trwałości relacji. Niemniej istotne są pieniądze, które zapewnią odpowiedni komfort życia oraz bezpieczeństwo.
Tak po prostu jest. Rainbow pokazuje smutną niesprawiedliwość życia, ale nie tylko. Widzimy że można próbować osiągnąć sukces i niektórym się to udaje. Trzeba po prostu do niego dążyć i mieć szczęście.
