It was on a balmy Saturday afternoon that I found myself meandering the cool, air-conditioned aisles of my local supermarket. The scent of freshly baked bread from the bakery corner intertwined with the soft hum of pop music playing overhead. I had entered with a small list - just bread, milk, and a couple of fruits. Yet, as I wandered, my cart began to fill, and I began to lose track of time.
Have you ever noticed the peculiar absence of windows in most supermarkets? I had never given it much thought until that day. But as I wandered, the realization hit me: the outside world felt remarkably distant, like a dream you struggle to remember upon waking. There’s a unique bubble-like quality to the space, where time becomes amorphous.
This isn't mere coincidence. The design is deliberate, aiming to create a world where the sun doesn't rise or set, where there's no rain or wind - just a constant glow of fluorescent lights. In this realm, there’s no ticking clock urging you to hurry. The outside world, with its pressing deadlines and fleeting sunsets, fades into insignificance. Here, you're encouraged, however subconsciously, to linger a little longer by the cereal aisle, to explore the newly stocked teas, or to indulge in a spontaneous chocolate bar.
And indulge I did. By the time I approached the checkout, my cart was brimming with items I hadn't intended to buy. A pack of cookies, a new flavor of chips, a magazine featuring a tempting summer salad. It's fascinating how a space can have such a profound influence on our decisions.
The spell was broken only when I exited the sliding doors, greeted by the setting sun and the gentle reminder that time, in the real world, had indeed moved on. I couldn't help but smile. There’s a magic to supermarkets – a carefully orchestrated dance of light, space, and consumer goods.
So, the next time you find yourself lost in the labyrinth of supermarket aisles, take a moment. Look around. Feel the absence of the outside world. Marvel at the design, the art, the science, and the psychology of it all. And perhaps, like me, you’ll leave not just with a cart full of groceries, but with a newfound appreciation for the subtle art of supermarket design.
