I am really keen to get solar. I had thought it wouldn't work well because the house faces almost totally east but I suppose that is similar to facing west really so it wouldn't be impossible

Modern solar panels (10 years old or less) don't need to be pointed directly at the sun to produce a usable output. If you have an obstructed view of the sun, you will likely just need a few extra panels to make up for the loss.
Good to know. It's always been my fear that I would be able to get them. I checked on maps and e face a bit east of south east. So that wouldn't need too bad then
Look me up if you decide to go for it. I'm part of a start up that makes solar storage batteries from used EV batteries. They cost about half as much as similar commercial products, and perform better. We also sell used and 'decommissioned' panels from commercial solar arrays, which have higher output in low light situations than the homeowner and hobbyist grade panels on the market. Depending on what you're looking to build, we could easily save you thousands of $.
