A Silver Candelstick?

Sure is. And yes, I purchased it many years ago with a bunch of other crap. I don’t remember how much I paid for it, but if I had to guess I would say only a couple of dollars. I was sifting through some antiques in boxes and came across it a few weeks ago. I thought why not do a post on it. What got me to thinking, more than if it’s silver, was how much Silver does it contain? That is a question I am looking to answer. That is the question I need your help with.

I pulled the candlestick out and it feels like it weighs roughly 8 ounces or so. Not 100% sure on the weight, but that is not the question I have. Question I have is how much silver is contained in this candle stick. On the bottom of the candlestick there is a stamp. The stamp says “Empire Sterling Weighted 382”.

Believe it or not this little bit of information says quite a bit. It tells me that the silver is in fact sterling, which is 92.5% silver. Another piece of information stamped on the bottom, is not a small fact by any means, but rather tells quite the story; “WEIGHTED”. Weighted means that this candle stick is filled with either sand, wax, or another material in order to give it weight so it doesn’t fall over. The piece will be more stable well there’s a lite candle sticking out of the top of it. Who wants something that’s burning to fall over? Not me! LOL So this tells me that the amount of sterling silver contained in this piece, could be rather minimal.

But how minimal really? I have no clue. How do I go about figuring out how much sterling silver is contained in this piece, and less I destroyed? So the next question I have is, Is it worth destroying this piece just to weigh the sterling silver? I think I can answer this question relatively easily… Nope, Not at these silver prices. I may as well wait until silver spikes. Then, maybe I will feel like it would be worth it to destroy something just to find out how much Sterling is in it. At that point I may be willing to sell it. The buyer will most likely want to know how much Silver they’re buying.

Maybe the piece is worth more as a candle stick, a decoration, then it is for the amount of silver it contains.

The things I think about while I’m just sitting staring off at the wall. LOL. Maybe one of my silver stacker friends has some advice or has even cut one of these apart and has answered this question already. Any advice?

That’s a beautiful piece or antique!! Nice to have found one!

It’s a classic! Honestly first look I wouldn’t of known it was silver. I gotta up my silver spotting game!

haha. So many things are silver plated anymore, that it is hard to tell at first glance.

For sure! I may hang on to it for a while. I wish I had two though. lol

Dude nice stick but needs a good polish

hehe.. What? You don't care for a dirty stick?! lol It does and I may just do that and post a photo below this comment. 😁

That's a find @bdmillergallery!
I've been wanting to show my sterling silver collection or my "unstackable stack".
Maybe soon!

Maybe we should join the 'Silver Gold Unstackable Stackers' Community. heheheeh 😂🤣

You know the other member here who is into unstackable stacks is @elizabethbit!

Silver Sterling Hallmarking language may just well be a foreign language to me. 🤔

hehe.. me too. please.. just state 925 and I would be just fine.

Antique Piece :)

Yes 😁 old stuff lol

That is pretty cool. I finally got around and made my first silver purchase last night. My wife was a little upset until I told her it was basically free money. I wasn't able to get what I had my eye on, but I at least picked up some other stuff. Good luck figuring this one out!

haha.. Free Money! Love it. I am happy to hear about you buying your first bit of silver!!! Sweet dude. I have been away for a while, did you post about it? Work has been absolutely nuts. Need vacation. lol

Yeah, I just posted about it yesterday because it got delivered on Monday. We are getting to the beginning of our busy time of year here so I hear you!

I have a few candlesticks lying around, gifts from my mom. I also have small collection of things like bowls , medicine dispensers, baby plates and cups we use for feeding babies here. The proverbial born with a silver spoon kinds. I have never bothered to check how much they weigh or if they are sterling silver, now my curiosity is aroused. I may be worth ( financially) more than I think I am hehe.

Yes, if they are in fact silver or sterling, then they may add to your investments. Sounds like they may be worth more to you for the sentimental value rather than silver content. I am sure they are absolutely beautiful too!

So, I have a lot of "unstackable-stackables". I can tell you that most likely the base is filled with concrete or maybe mortar. The top part that holds the candle, is probably solid, and the portion above the base but below the candle holder portion, could be hollow.

Then, I found this listing:

Might be worth keeping them for the antique value!

Take care!

That's what I was thinking.. definitely worth more for it's antique value. I tried the link, but it took me to an error page.. oh well.

Interesting.....I just clicked on it but 'open in a new tab' and it worked. Maybe try again? But, nonetheless, there's something old world and classy about silver candlesticks! Take care!
