Thought I would share a recent purchase I made of a Capped Bust Hlaf Dollar. It was minted in the year 1836 and has some wear to it, so it has seen some action thoughout its life.
The engarvaer for both the obverse and reverse was John Reich. Reich was an immigrant from Bavaria. He had been an endentured servant before being recommended by Thomas Jefferson to be an engaver at the Philadephia mint.
The obverse displays a total of thirteen stars (seven on one side, six on the other) which represent the original thirteen states of the United States. Liberty is wearing what is called a Phrygian or Freedom Cap which was something popular during the Revolutionary War. On the headbaNd is the word LIBERTY. The date is at the bottom edge of the coin.
The reverse displays an eagle with olive branches and arrows cluthed within its claws. A shiled is displayed on the eagles breast. The scroll above the eagle should read E PLURBUS UNUM, but this one is too worn to really read it. As you can see the country surrounds the outter edge around the top of the coin and the denimination is at the bottom edge.
I was looking for a little better specimen than this one, but any better was out of my budget and price range. This one goes into helping me complete my type set.
If you have any further information about this coin you would like to add, like historical information I left out or want to correct any I may have gotten wrong, please drop it in the comments.
Thanks for reading,
Joe

Oh damn you did. That was a nice one too!! I’m jealous ST
I wonder what this must have looked like when it was new. It's still quite impressive with the wear, so I can only imagine how sharp it must have been!
Sorry, I should have included and image of a good looking specimen from the Web for comparison. Yes, they look sharp when not so worn.
No worries! I totally understand!
Very cool coin! I feel like most of these cost a small fortune, so it's great to have any of them, even a severely worn one.
Thanks. Yeah, they are expensive, especially in the higher grades. I got lucky and found this one in a lower graede for a decent price.
One day, you might have the chance to acquire better specimens. Coin collecting have been trending downward for the last two decades and my local coin shop manager has seen more collection lots selling. While the ultra rare premium coins continue to appreciate, more common specimens are selling well below Red Book values. With some patience and maybe a little luck it can be done.
