It has been a while since posting for the #silvergoldstacker community. Even though I haven't shared anything for a while doesn't mean I stopped collecting. That said, I have a corner of the dining room table taken over again with my loot. Ans again, the wife is on me to get them out of there. So here is my first post of a handful to come down the pipe.
As some may remember, I have a nice little collection of U.S. classic commemoratives going. This one was my last purchase that arrived. It is the 1921 Alabama Centennial Commemorative Half Dollar.
There are actually two different versions of them in circulation. There is my version and then there is a version with "2x2" right above the stars on the obverse. The later version usually goes for a higher price, but is not much more scarce than the regular one like mine.
Portraits of William Wyatt Bibb, the first governor of Alabama, and Thomas E. Kilby, the governor when the coin was designed. Twenty-two stars are arranged to each side of the portrait. Some coins were struck with “2X2” in the right field above the stars. Although this was intended to be a scarcer variety, ultimately the number of plain and “2X2” coins were very close. [1]
I was lucky and picked up two of these while shopping around the auction sites. It was a screw up though because I thought one was a "2x2" version, but was not. Either way, I think the two governors look like a couple of sour pusses and the engraver, Laura Gardin Fraser, didn't do them any favors.
The reverse has a perched eagle holding a ribbon in its beak. This symbol is borrowed from the state seal of Alabama. For some reason, I think it is the size of the eagle as it relates to the coin, but I really like the reverse design alot.
Numista has more information regarding this coin, so I want waste anymore time copy, pasting and attributing stuff from there. You can go read up if interested.
Now, what to do with my extra 1921 Alabama Centennial Commemorative Half Dollar. You tell me, sell it outright or raffle? Let me know in the comments.
If you have any further information about this coin you would like to add, like historical information I left out or want to correct any I may have gotten wrong, please drop it in the comments.
Thanks for reading,
Joe

I was reading along than "two sour pusses" came up, haha. A variant usually means less were struck but interesting that both are relatively of the same in circulation quantity.
See, there I go with using the wrong verbiage again. What I meant to say was that about the sam amount was minted. I am not sure what is in circulation, but imagine the 2x2 variant is less since less were minted. I know it is more valuable than mine by decent amount. In AU condition the difference is about $60USD.
Really cool coin! One of the things I’m sad about and annoyed is I had a quarter from like 1947 or something when they were silver and I accidentally spent it when I wanted to keep it since it was silver lol. I don’t remember the year but it was one that was silver.
Damn I was just looking at some of my coins the other day. I have to get off my butt and post some of them! I don’t have many but we have a couple cool ones. Some random ones from places all over.
I would love to see them and I am sure the rest of the SGS would be interested as well.
That is very cool, and one I don't have in my collection. Very nice coin!
How are you doing this week?
Thanks. I am doing well actually considering. Hope you are as well.
