I am not sure if I would be considered a serious collector of coins by some. I don't necessarily collect for the investment. I do it for the fun of it. I'm just a hobbiest I guess if you were to call me anything that loves to spend his money on coins.
One of the things i really enjoy is reading bits and pieces about coins or history behind something to do with the portraits or design on the coin. Heck, even stories about the designers can even be pretty juicy.
One magazine I subscribe to and receive a physical copy of is Numismatic News. The reason I do is that it doesn't seem to be directed toward investor type collectors only like Coinage magazine. I like Numismatic News because it covers the spectrum from investors to hobbiest like me for its audience.
They have some good stories and articles about old coins, new coins, commemorative coins and the people they commemorate. THey talk about grading, errors, safety, insurance, etc. The topics they can cover is endless or at least they continue to surprise me.
Yeah, I know, physical magazines and books are a thing of dinosaurs. Shit I'm becoming a fossil myself. At least I feel like it sometimes. But for me there is something special about holding a physical copy of what your reading in your hands, smelling the print and turning each page.
Same for a coin, there is nothing like finally attaining an old coin and holding it in your hands. Yes, we are a little more careful in handling them than a magazine, but the ability to hold history in your hands is something that I find remarkable.
I always say, if an old coin could just talk, especially a circulated one, they could tell some good stories. Stories that we can sometimes find in Numismatic News. Which is why I will continue to subscribe and recommend to anyone who enjoys collecting.
If you have any further information about other places to find coin news and information for hobbiest like me or anything you would like to add, please drop it in the comments.
Thanks for reading,
Joe

🤔 Being both a Stacker and a Collector I'd estimate that 75% is Stacking and 25% is collecting if I had to put a figure on them. I started out inheriting my father's collection until 2014 when I began Stacking for the long term. Picking up a few collecting coins along the way since.

I have am trying to get focused back on collecting a little more. I may pick up a piece for stacking here and there in the future, but may wait for things to drop and then focus on stacking more.
I bet your father had a nice collection.
It was mostly Canadian circulation silver, some US Constitutional silver that included 12 silver dollars, some European silver coins that came over around the WW1 and WW2, some Asian silver coins, a five oz. Johnson Matthey bar and an 8 Reales silver coin. What a way to jump start my Stacking journey.
That is one hella start!
I think if your name is Coin Joe...
You are by all means a valid stacker of coins😂😂
Nope Im a beginning stacker but been collecting coins for years as a hobby.
It would be fun if they could talk! It's great to enjoy a nice magazine in your hands every now and again. They will likely all eventually vanish completely, enjoy it while it last brother!
Yeah, I don't know if it is sad or not, but I am still one of those dinosaurs that get a newspaper too.
Yeah, I like all that stuff too and would probably enjoy that mag. I'd run down to the newsstand and pick up a copy but I'd need a time machine to do that 🤣
They do have digital copies
