A Shiny Slice of Indonesian History: The 1974 Rp 2,000 Silver Coin

in Silver Gold Stackers5 months ago

Hey there, silver stackers! Back again, and this time we're diving into a truly unique piece: the 1974 Indonesian Rp 2,000 silver coin. Remember how I snagged that Zombuff silver round in a bundle deal with this beauty? Let's just say the free shipping sealed the deal!

Before I started stacking silver, I had no idea Indonesia ever minted silver coins. Talk about hidden gems in your own backyard, right? Well, now I'm the proud owner of one, and it comes with a pretty cool story.

This little silver guy actually played a part in World Cup history! Back in 1974, during the final match between Germany and the Netherlands, the referee, Jack Taylor, needed a way to choose which team kicked off first. What did he use? You guessed it – this very coin! Apparently, Mr. Taylor liked the design on both sides (good taste!), and the weight (around 25 grams) was perfect for a fair toss.

Now, let's talk about the coin itself. On the front, you'll find the Indonesian national emblem along with the text "BANK INDONESIA 1974 BHINNEKA TUNGGAL IKA" (Unity in Diversity). Flip it over, and you're greeted by a majestic Javan tiger.

But this coin goes beyond cool visuals. It was actually part of a conservation campaign! Back then, Bank Indonesia teamed up with the WWF to raise awareness about endangered animals. Featuring the Javan tiger wasn't just a design choice – it was a call to action.

There are actually two versions of this coin: a standard silver version with 50% silver content (minted around 43,648) and a special proof version with 92.5% silver content (minted around 18,000). Both are pretty rare finds these days.

Speaking of rare finds, stay tuned for another post where I'll chat about the 1974 Rp 5,000 orangutan coin – another Indonesian silver beauty with a conservation message.

That's all for now, folks! Thanks for reading, and keep stacking those shiny treasures. May your days be brighter than a polished silver round!

WWF has issued various sets of silver coins highlighting endangered species as a part of their squareness campaign through the years. A sweet find @ekads

Yes, you're right, in one of the communities I joined, someone shared that during that time WWF in collaboration with various countries issued silver coins with a conservation theme. Even in another place I read, there are people who have collected 17 silver coins from various countries that work with WWF with the theme of conservation.

The Rhinoceros Hornbill bird is among my WWF coins.

Wow, I didn't realize that the Malaysian 25 Ringgit coin is one of the WWF series coin sets. Later on, I found some sellers offering it with its luster condition. Maybe in the future I will add it in my collection.

Damn, those coins make me addicted to add them to my collection. It seems like the saying "This is the only hobby that makes you broke but still has a lot of money" is true. 😂😂😂
