Just before the 1870s there was a lot of gold panning here in BC and that was the Caribou Gold rush. New Westminster is the capital of this colony and a staging point where Prospectors, miners and anyone with the gold bug began their pursuit from here into the BC interior.
A lot of gold flowed from here. Raising concerns of the US or Russia claiming and annexing the region. The colony of British Columbia was offered to join the Canadian Confederation on the promise of building a railroad to the West Coast. We been sucked in ever since.
I'm sure there are some choice places to find a few nuggets here.

I'm sure there are a lot of places with lots of gold. Getting there and finding them is the challenge. Historically there has been a lot of gold there, which means there is still a lot more. It is funny how gold shaped the current population centers, same thing in the US!
