Metal Detecting Update: Found my oldest coin yet-- an 1876 Seated Liberty Quarter!!!

in Silver Gold Stackers4 years ago (edited)

Hey Hive Peeps,

I'm so excited! I'm about 8 months into metal detecting and can check one more off my bucket list. Yesterday, I found a beauty on the river bank! This coin below is a 1876 Liberty Seated Silver Quarter. This was the standard quarter in America from 1838-1891. It may be in horrible condition...but to know that I found silver this old...well ...it just feels great!

I was about to leave the detecting site with only one wheat cent (not a horrible day to find only one wheat but not great)...and then this appeared... The signal on the detector was kind of so so but so glad I investigated!

This is what silver will look like when exposed to water and air for 150 years.

After lightly removing some of the heavy tarnish to decipher a design this showed up...

This is about as bad of condition as a coin can get...but fortunately with the date and faint outline, I could make out the type of coin. The coin is much thinner than a typical quarter now as the river banks naturally rock-tumbled this baby for 150 years haha.

The back of the coin is very hard to see...

Sometimes it's not about the condition of a coin, but the thought of the history this coin must have been/traveled through. It is also awesome that it is 90% silver!

Bonus: Last week I also found a Indian Head Penny from 1898. Yeah!

Hope you guys are doing well. I wish the best to all those treasure seekers and silver stackers! Keep stackin'

Cheers!

Yes those are some exciting finds, tfeldman. Thanks for showing.

Appreciate the support. Thanks!

Nice find. Cool that you could still read the year. It's a little piece of history.

Thanks man! It's going on display haha. Hope you are well.

Got a Garret 400i and found plenty of non-silver loose change, keys, gum wrappers, nails, etc.
I did find a silver dime left in a Coinstar Machine.

One day I'll find some buried treasure, Congrats on the Score! @tfeldman

Thanks! I am not familiar with the 400 much but it seems like an all-around detector! The better the detector, the more it will distinguish more trash and if a good object is near trash...but nothing is perfect... it's more about the place you search than the detector for finding silver...and a good amount of luck too!

Supercool find! Congrats!
