Normally, I'd make a post about it much, much later but it seems to have piqued the interest of my fellow stacker @kerrislravenhill so why not move it a few spots on the schedule? :)

Btw, she posts some really good shit, give her a follow if you like ^-^

So... What's the deal with this coin?

Well, for starters, it's yet another beautiful, commemorative 10 Deutsche mark coin:

received_670869561850021.jpeg

That's one sexy imperial chicken eagle!

Now, a quick Google search reveals this is a commerorative coin minted in 1998 for the 900th Anniversary since the birth of Hildegard von Bingen, whoever the fuck that is.

Judging from the iconography, my first impression is of a woman receiving enlightenment from the holy spirit or something. So, if I were to guess I'd say it's about a scholar or Saint.

Turns out I was pretty close as she was... both!

Hildegard of Bingen (1098 – 17 September 1179), also known as Saint Hildegard and the Sibyl of the Rhine, was a German Benedictine abbess and polymath active as a writer, composer, philosopher, mystic, visionary, and as a medical writer and practitioner during the High Middle Ages. She is one of the best-known composers of sacred monophony, as well as the most recorded in modern history. She has been considered by scholars to be the founder of scientific natural history in Germany source and more info

Sounds like an active and smart woman! She even invented a constructed language known as Lingua Ignota.

The edge of the coin is engraved with the phrase "Wisse die Wege des Herrn" which in English translates to "Know the ways of the Lord"

received_791958359047910.jpeg

This particular phrase appears in one of her works known as Scivias, an illustrated book where she describes 26 religious visions she experienced.

The full context is as follows:

"Wisse die Wege des Herrn: Weiche nicht ab auf Abwege, und verharre auf den Wegen des Lebens, damit du auf den Pfaden der Gerechtigkeit schreitest und nicht vom Weg abkommst."

That translates to:

"Know the ways of the Lord: Do not turn aside onto wrong paths, but stay on the ways of life, so that you may walk on the paths of righteousness and not deviate from the path."

Ok, I think we said enough about this interesting lazy! I Feel free to visit any of the links above to learn more about her!

Silver Value
Although most commemorative German marks tend to be off 0.625 purity, this is one of the few that is made of 0.925 silver, with a total weight of 15.5 g. That amounts to exactly 14.3375 grams of silver. Nice!

Let's have a look at today's spot price

Screenshot_20230716-144950~2.png

Nice, that's 5 cents (per g) more than the last time I checked, about a week ago! Hopefully the trend continues!

So, today this beautiful coin has a melt value of about 11.5 U.S. dollars.

Ok, let's move on with the random silver fact of the day before wrapping things up

Random Silver Fact of the Day

Silver reflects about 95% of visible light, making it the most reflective metal known to humans. This exceptional property is what gives silver its characteristic luster or shine. When polished, silver surfaces have a brilliant and mirror-like appearance, contributing to its use in jewelry, coins, mirrors, and other decorative items.

The high reflectivity of silver extends to wavelengths beyond the visible spectrum, encompassing infrared and ultraviolet light. This quality is particularly valuable in the field of optics and the production of mirrors, where the reflective coating is applied to glass surfaces to create functional mirrors for various applications. [via chatgpt]

Well, I knew it was reflective when polished.. But not that it hold the record amongst all metals!

The End

Ok plebs, I hoped you enjoyed reading about yet another coin from my collection. Imo, this is a nice small piece of art and the respectable silver amount is a nice bonus !

See you soon with a new piece!

Cool "Lingua Ignota", that rings a church bell!

My imagination connected some creative dots, it may be the code between the members of the secret Nunja Order of the Six knives.

This PAMP silver art bar belongs to a friend of mine.

Nuns are cool, especially those with a hint of mystery.

"Deus nostris tenebris opusculum lucis benedicat"

Yes, there may be a connection between silver & spirituality.

Mary looks like a ninja here 😂

You could be right, then again it could be nothing.
Be curious when you send your kids to Sunday school.

I thought women couldn't do much in the middle ages ( like writing famous shit ) but she sounds like a badass. Don't know about the religious visions though :P

I wonder if Silver is still used for Mirrors...

I think a really old one in my family house is made of silver!

I have one like that, but with a Blue Mirror Frame...

Damn @trumpman, I've seen many posts from your hand, but few of them so informative as this one. Interesting blog, and very nice coin

Awesome one's fr...

She even invented a constructed language known as Lingua Ignota

Interesting fact... Knowing the whole context it gets even more better!

Thanks for that biography, she was important enough historically to get her own coin. Not too bad! That's a nice coin, pretty one. That whole bunch are nice as shiny!

Interesting about the high reflectivity, I didn't know that. That's probably why the rich folks in the old days had mirrors of silver, but they must have tarnished quickly. You would have to have your servants polish it daily!

That's a pretty coin!

"There is the music of Heaven in all things."
-Hildegard of Bingen

To her music is peace of mind and the sound of music build the bridge between you and heaven.

Hildegard of Bingen was a very respected figure in the twelfth century Catholic Church for her prophesies, scientific writing, medical writing, and religious poetry. Her chant, Alleluia, O virga mediatrix, is a praise for the Virgin Mary which exemplifies the Gregorian chant genre of the Middle Ages. The most defining characteristics of a Gregorian chant, or plainchant, is the single-line melody and melismatic text setting.

Very well elaborated. You have written a very informative post. Very beautiful coin.

That's a beautiful coin! I love the design, and the silver content is a nice bonus. I'm also impressed by the fact that it's made of 0.925 silver, which is a high purity.

Thanks for the silver fact of the day! I didn't know that silver was the most reflective metal known to humans. That's really interesting.

Nice coin. It looks like Hildegard did some amazing stuff when it came to art and music.

I like how you share information about the history and design of the banknotes, as well as the life and work of Hildegard von Bingen. I think it's important to know the history behind the everyday objects we use, and your post is a great way to do that.
