ARGININE (abbr. Arg, Arg), amino acid. It is part of proteins, especially protamines (up to 85%) and histones. Means. quantities of A. are present in plants (red algae, pumpkin, etc.), especially in reserve and germinal organs, which is associated with the function of nitrogen accumulation and transfer in living organisms. For adult mammals, A. is not indispensable, and in young mammals its biosynthesis is insufficient. A. participates in a number of important enzymatic reactions: in the formation of urea and ornithine, creatine, arginine phosphate, etc
