The @shadowspub prompt a day fiction prompt for May 10 is, “If her husband had believed her when she said she was getting migraines every day, maybe she wouldn’t have left him.” and that’s what I’m writing about. I don’t know a lot about this subject, as it’s not a natural reaction for apes to have migraines.
I hope that you enjoy the story. It’s the first story that I’ve written about humans and their lives to post here on hive. I also hope the fact it was written by an ape isn’t too obvious. – A. Skunk Ape
She was on her own now, and glad that she had her own car. She was also glad that she and her husband hadn’t opted to have children. She couldn’t imagine having a child with such a beast, and there would be no telling what would result from that gene mixture. She felt blessed she would never have to find out.
He never believed her, even when she was in agony. Especially when the migraines hit. If her husband had believed her when she said she was getting migraines every day, maybe she wouldn’t have left him. He didn’t, of course, so she did. It became unbearable to live with someone who couldn’t seem to comprehend that someone else could have chronic pain, even if he didn’t. He’d really go off on her.
His characterization of her as a whining, complaining, useless hypochondriac, was just too much for her. In her eyes, he had turned into a stranger; nothing more than an uncaring, mean oaf of a man.
She understood that it was hard to be in a relationship with someone that gets migraines daily. The pain usually made her feel not very excited about sex, for one thing, but she’d still try. It wasn’t good enough for him though, and that made things even worse.
From his perspective, the marriage changed when she started having the migraines daily. It was like she had become an invalid, which was bad for both of them, as her migraines completely ruined the feelings they had for each other over time.
When they met, they were both energetic and active. They both loved the water, boating, water-skiing, scuba diving; they both loved playing tennis and usually gave each other a good workout on the courts. They went out often and had lots of fun, dining, dancing, either when they were alone together, or with other friends. Life was fun, but then, life had become Hell.
Sure, a lot was put upon him, maybe more than he deserved, but she didn’t ask to be stricken with the daily migraines either, and for him to disbelieve her and accuse her of lying about the pain she was enduring showed that he lacked empathy. She never understood how such people could even exist.
Driving to the courthouse the day the divorce proceedings would take place, the outcome of which she already knew, would be the last time she would have to see his face and hear his voice. She had told her lawyer that she didn’t want the home or anything in the home. Just her personal belongings. She’d settle with a payoff of half the property’s value.
About a month later, she stopped having the migraines. It was like a miracle had happened. The more she thought about it, she came to believe that her migraines had started in the first place because of the relationship. His behavior and lack of empathy planted the seed, and his disbelief in her debilitating pain, brought even more pain to bear on her.
She thought about her situation, and how she would still be having those horrible migraines if she had stayed. Then she thought about all the women who had gone through a similar Hell and never escaped it. She took great comfort in knowing that she had done the right thing.
