When I last went out hiking in the sunlight, which now seems like a distant memory because it's been raining here for days on end, I was alone, just me and my thoughts and my camera.

I don't go out hiking just to see the same boring paths that I saw last time because there's always this niggly feeling that there's more exciting stuff to be had once you leave the trodden pathway that many others have trapesed and you venture into unchartered territory. I can hear all the environmentalists screaming at me that paths are there for a reason blah blah blah...but do you honestly think that mother nature gives that many fucks? In the grander scheme of things, our little pathways are insignificant to her. Trails become trails through wear and tear over time. I know this because game trails get cemented by animals too in the same way - creatures of habit just like us. She treats us all pretty equally.

I've never been great at conforming to the masses. I was told in school when I took a psychometric test for career choices that I don't like authority. Of course, I argued with her just to prove a point lol. It apparently didn't bode well for my original career choices which never materialized anyway thankfully.

It's exactly the same when I find myself in the wilderness or when I approach how I take photos, I like to walk my own path, even if I have sunspots in my eyes for hours afterwards, I'll point my camera into the sun if there's a possibility that the photo will be worth it. Is that very Machiavellian of me? Probably. My mom always used to say "You have to suffer to be beautiful".

When I was hiking I found myself in a section of the park that is secreted away. I know this because there was no path. I was very surprised to find a bench in the middle of nowhere with a view that was pretty spectacular. I love how the trees were reflected in the water.

Staring at the sun-1-2.jpg

I got a bit of a kick out of it because I'm sure that there are hundreds of people that have come through this park and taken photos of the same things I have but have no idea that this little spot even exists. Why? because there isn't a pathway leading them there. They lack the adventurous spirit and curiosity to find it, or the inclination to go looking.

It's encapsulated by trees and rather dark in there. If there once was a pathway, it's been reclaimed by nature and long forgotten. She's a badass that way.

So what's my point of this long-winded post?

Never be scared of the challenge of going somewhere pathless. Don't take photos in a particular way because a book says you have to. Find your own sense of adventure and blaze your own trail. Take a leaf out of nature's book and refuse to be boxed. Picasso did it and I think it served him well.

When was the last time you tried something new or different when outdoors? What was it? Did it work out the way you had hoped?

In your own words there are no rules so don't pay any attention to the rubbish regarding damaging our eyes by looking at the sun. In fact, the more you look at it, the better you will see. But not in the way we imagine. A deeper kind of inner sight. At this time of year I stare at the sun during sunrise most days, anything from 15 - 30mins. Like a meditation, just breathing and staring. Best to do it barefoot too, for optimum connection. If you've never done this intentionally before it is a good idea to build up slowly, using your eyes as an indicator. If it feels too much it's probably too much. You will find over time it becomes easier and easier to sungaze and make that awesome connection. Even when the sun is higher in the sky.

Picasso once said "It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child." And it is the same with sungazing. Only when we can approach it like a child, without pre-programmed fears or expectations will we receive the benefits.

Thanks for the enjoyable post which caught me with the title :)

I haven't been able to see the sunrise for a while. Or walk around outside barefoot because it's so bloody cold here I'd probably get frostbitten feet. Come spring though and I plan on some adventure so if I can drag my sorry ass out of bed early enough, it will be on the cards.

I like this, it works so perfectly. The programming in this world these days is so bad, I try not to dwell on it too much because it makes me angry. The worst is that not many can see through it like you do.

Thank YOU for coming by and having a read. I always appreciate it and am glad that it resonated with you. Have a beautiful day

Best line ever. You go girl!

This is a lovely post and with a nice message. A person should never be afraid of finding their own adventure in life. Society is so predictable, one following after the other and people have lost their sense of individualism and adventure. Sad really.

Becca 🌷

Hi Becca

Thanks for reading my post. I agree, it's very sad that people are so inclined towards herd mentality these days. There is so much more exciting stuff when you ask difficult questions and you find places no-one has been. Oh well, more for us who have a wider perspective on life.

Hope things at home are ok (I know they aren't, but you know what I mean), look after yourself please.

🦋 Em 💚

Thank you Emma, I appreciate your comment and the kind sentiment. We will push through and make things work.

Becca 🌻

You did capture two nice photos. I have a rebellious spirit as well. It is something that did not always serve me well during my military career, but many times it did.

It has been some time since I tried something new, especially outdoors. This is mostly due to physical limitations. However, I have been doing better. The weather is now good and I plan to get out more now. Recently @galenkp convinced me to breakout my old camera and start using it again. So I plan to get back out in the local state parks some. Maybe I will hit some easy hiking trails and snap a few shots. Not sure it will work out like I hope, but I won't know unless I try.

Bloody galenkp, never shuts up.

May need to get a galenkp fucker-upper just for him 😀

Hahaha knowing Galen, I don't know if this is entirely advisable 🤣

Possibly, most definitely, maybe not.

Joe, Joe, Joe...me old mate... galenkpfuckeruppers don't work, I'm impervious. If people want me to shut up donuts need to be involved.

There's nothing wrong with having a rebellious spirit Joe. As for the second statement... Hence why I referred to those career choices of mine not panning out!

Ooh that sounds like fun up ahead. Galen has a way of convincing us to do things that serve us well. I should know. He convinced me to join Hive almost a year ago now 😃 and he won't let me forget it hahahaha.

What kind of old camera is it? A film camera or digital? The reason I ask is when I refer to my old camera, it was still operated with AA batteries (we didn't have rechargeables back then) and spools of film. Gosh, that doesn't even seem all that long ago to be honest, now we carry these things with us everywhere.

I'm keen to see what you find. Just take it easy and listen to your body. When it starts yelling at you, just remind yourself that you don't have a drill Sgt anymore and you are allowed to stop when you want to.

Have a good one

Oh, it is old by technology standards. It is a digital camera. I would imagine we have had it for at least 15 to 18 years. It is nothing to brag about, a Kodak Z1012 IS. I actually would like to get an old 35mm Nikonus IV or V. I was trained on those in my early years in in the Marines and would like to play around with one again to learn to use it again.

Oh, I will be fine, I was the Sgt, so I will be a hard ass on myself if needed. 🤣

Have a fantastic weekend!

Ah ok, you'll be fine then.

Kodak made great cameras, I was not happy when they dissolved a few years back, it was a sad day for photography because it showed how digital had taken over. It felt like the song "Video killed the radio star".

To be able to master a film camera after using digital for this long would be like the martial arts of photography. I don't think I have the patience of waiting to get film developed 🤣

You too Joe. Enjoy it.

Fuck paths! That's the first thing I think when I go out into the wilds! Glad I'm not alone 😀

Paths are for pussies 😁 We didn't invent glorious beast 4x4s just so we could drive on boring tarred roads all day.

Hope you are well Boomy.

I am grand lass, hope you are too!

Yeah, get off that road¬!

Wise words. I never liked taking the beaten path. I also get lost easily ( especially in cities ). I like to call that 'lack of direction' a metaphor for life and I think it's only natural and definitely less boring than a straight line from A to Z.

Amazing picture!

Hey Philosoraptor

How are you doing? Oh, don't get me started on 'lack of direction', I scream at my GPS Doris when she says "Head East". I'm like "which way is EAAAAASSSSSTTTT?" lol. Getting lost is sometimes a blessing in disguise when you run into something you didn't expect. Sometimes though, in the wilderness, it could be a bear which is not a blessing in disguise.

I'm glad you liked the photo too. 🐉

I scream at my GPS Doris when she says "Head East". I'm like "which way is EAAAAASSSSSTTTT?" lol.

Hahaha!

No bears here, so I'm not afraid of that, already I might run into a wild pig.

xx

Wild pigs are not to be truffled with, they are cranky things with big teeth.

😄

"truffled with"

Nice pun :<)

They might be cranky but I just make sure not to hike in the dark.
They are basically night creatures ;<)

If there ever was the right mantra to go about life, it would be all of these. Your photos are beautiful and it cannot be overemphasized the thrill and beauty in forging your own path in life and not always going by the book.
I love how matter of fact and fearless you say it and that makes me happy for reasons I don't know. It's so lovely to meet you @emma-h. I'm not quite sure how I ended up reading this but I'm super glad I did.🤗

Hello Tessa. Nice to meet you too, although I have commented with you previously a few days ago. Thank you for stopping by, I'm very happy that you felt what I was trying to emphasise in this post. Not everyone gets it, those that do (like you and a couple others) are the ones that I like to engage with. We see the world slightly differently and if my words empowered you today, then my job here is done 😁

Hope to chat with you more often. Have a good day/night.

Emma 🦋

although I have commented with you previously a few days ago.

Really?! I'm sorry about that. I swear it's the damned glasses. Really hard to see what happens around my eyes these days. lol

We see the world slightly differently

Sometimes I'm scared to share how different my views are to a lot of people so I won't be labelled 'weird' but ironically, I've come to realize that I like being 'weird.'
Normal is boring right?😁

No, don't apologize. I commented on your weekend engagement post about Good vs Bad. It was a good post.

No judgement here, I'm weird and proud of it. Being scared to show your authenticity is natural - society has trained us to do that from birth. Whenever I get scared like that I remember this line

"My darling girl, when are you going to realize that being normal is not necessarily a virtue? It rather denotes a lack of courage!" and go back to being my weird self 😁

My darling girl, when are you going to realize that being normal is not necessarily a virtue? It rather denotes a lack of courage!"

In essence, we are weird and proud of it. Unapologetically.😌
Definitely made my day!

Completely agree dear @emma-h. The grace is in putting our own mark on everything we do. Maybe at the beginning we need some important general guidelines, like the child who is beginning to take his first steps, but then we need to stamp our particular stamp and look for those "adventures" that come to give true meaning to life.

Thank you so much for sharing such intimate considerations. Best of luck on your way and may your photographic talent give you many more satisfactions in the future!

Thanks for your lovely comment and having a read through my post. I appreciate you taking the time. I agree with you on guidelines, but nothing great ever came out of full on conformity to the herd mentality. Look at lemmings for example.

Have a good day 🦋

beautiful images, congratulations... Greetings and success.

Thank you @enmaoro I'm glad you like them.

🤗🤩

That's the magic of nature, that any hidden place surprises you with its beauty.

Cheers!

That's very true @florbelys, thanks for your comment.

Have a good day 🙂

Love this, love adventure and going beyond the beaten path, cheers for your freedom

Thanks @fenngen , I'm glad there I'm not the only one. 🌱
