Actually I love that picture.
And in my experience I have had friends who have had polymer lowers fail in as little as 100 rounds.
The reinforced versions that they had to come up with because of these issues are way better.
However look up the long life AR-15s. There is a full auto machine gun rental in Las Vegas that has AR-15s that have been documented with million plus rounds.
AK-47s actually only can do 100,000 rounds before you shoot the barrel out.
And the difference is is the mayor 15 you just unscrew a barrel nut and replace the barrel a couple of screws a new bolt and the AR-15 can do another 100,000 rounds.
So....
Just go get a couple Anderson $50 AR-15 lowers and that wonderful jig as well as milling machine and you are making a much better investment with your time.....
Good job that your friend is getting into this however avoiding the polymer unless it's the polymer 80 Glocks.... Is definitely an advisable thing.
And we will see but I think that's going to sum up my adventure. And I'm getting an ambidextrous one in two or three months. So I'm super excited for that to happen.
These are the reinforced type, but mine are aluminum. My daily carry is polymer, and it has been flawless. Besides, I can't afford 50,000 rounds, LOL!
I don't care for full auto, it just wastes rounds. I am large enough to hold it on target, but it is still not accurate.

I bought the jig before it was popular, so it was inexpensive then. The mill is 7000 pounds, and 7 foot tall; and accurate!
I have helped several new builders assemble their toys, and have allowed one to cut his 80% on my equipment.
That said, to me, the AR -15 is underpowered and not good for much. If I relied on it, I'd go to an AR-10 in a 308.
I prefer an M-14....

However the AR-10 system is phenomenal.
That Ruger of mine on paper is the bee's knees and we will see what happens when it gets delivered. If it shoots straight and if they fix the barrel.
The gas piston makes it a little bit heavier but base weight of 8.6 lb I believe...
However a lot of pansies say it's too heavy.
I'm really tickled that I got not only the 10 round magazine but also 20 and 25 round magazines for the SR.
And I need to complete a Rock River lar8 one of these days. Interesting design. Totally proprietary.

The M1A1 suits me well, and I love the platform! I use the military peep sight with no scope, because my long range will be covered by a 300 win mag.
I wonder if the AR-10 frame can hold up to the 308 charge. I do like the longer case ability, but it is lighter than I like. If it were steel, it might be okay. Titanium would be ideal, but it is difficult to machine.
I am, sadly, a tool whore, LOL! I have one piece of test equipnent that originally sold for $75,000 that I use in my consulting business.
I made a pair of switchable electrodes in my shop that was 5 by 22 foot. Now that was fun...they were powder coated for calibrated electrode areas.
I'm adding investment casting to my metal pouring capability! It's never boring....

I enjoy my 6.5mm Swedish. I have harvested deer at over 450 yards with that round!
But I may build up some AR-10 stuff, but we are running out of time on 80% stuff. May be forced to scratch build....

There are a lot of options for sure! It is wise to limit conversioms to calibers that you already have, with ammo where it is. Preferrably one that you reload already.
The AR-9 shoots 9mm pistol ammo, but with a long barrel; you'll get a lot more power out of that round. The prepper goal of both shooting the same round is easily met that way too.
I gave looked at conversion kits for the 45 acp, but since I reload that, and with 22 LR so scarce; I didn't pursue that. Might be interesting with the 556....
