He's growing and learning!
Food from the wild is a preference around here, especially over the grocery store. These Little-Peppers have been gaining some skills and learning various harvesting methods for wild game. In this video, our oldest son "Monster Truck" takes down two whitetail does with a crossbow. If you're offended by where meat comes from, please don't watch.
For us, we know the effort that goes into raising sheep, goats and cows. The meat that we get from the smaller ones (sheep and goats) is relatively comparable to what we get when we harvest a deer. That said, it can take a lot less effort to successfully harvest and process a wild deer over raising a sheep or goat for a few years and then eating it.
Thankfully, we live in a state where hunting is relatively easy and cheap. Youth do not even need to purchase hunting licenses, so they hunt for free. Each of us is allowed to harvest six deer each in the state during a season, and in our “zone” we are allowed five. Moreover, the hunting season lasts from in September until the end of February, so we have about five months of opportunity. Moreover, if hunters are not keeping the population in check, car accidents and disease can increase, so it’s a beneficial way to provide food for the family and keep things safer around here. Enjoy the show!
