I am a developer, but a lot of this goes over my head. I'm just glad to see that people are thinking hard about possible attacks. I knew that RC cost was once defence. There have to be compromises in stopping attacks whilst allowing normal users to operate. It's another incentive to build up your HP. Doing that across thousands of accounts would be expensive.
We had a different type of attack reported on this week where claimed accounts got some free delegation. I would hope that will be harder in future, but the bad guys will keep trying and it could get worse as Hive gets more attention.

I assume the attack was exploiting some bug in third party service that offers account creations. If it was the blockchain level issue I'd love to hear some details on it.
I don't think it was low level. They were able to create lots of accounts and exploit the Ecency points. Details here.
