I'll talk more about it in my Hive Goals post next Monday, but I did pass my Hive Power goal the other day, reaching and passing 35,000. Not a huge number, all things considered—still not even an orca yet, which I believe is around 55k now—but even so, it is a nice level to reach.
What are my reasons for powering up? Well, I like Hive and want to support it. Even with all the doom and gloom around here, even with the DHF abuse, even with all the negativity surrounding the abuse the whales are accused of, I still think Hive is a pretty great place. We have a great technology here and this place can be even greater in the future. Lots of potential. And hey, what other place on the web can you be paid for writing, low as it may be (especially right now, in the bear market).
Another of my reasons for powering up is curation and the upvotes I can give. I like supporting people. I'm not a rich man, so I can't really support the arts as much as I would like, but on Hive I can still try to be encouraging and show as much support as I am able. Currently my 100% upvote is right at $0.20. Again, that's not much, but it's something. When the price of HIVE goes up, that value will go up too.
And then there is comments, which the title of this post teased.
Up until now, I have always upvoted comments, but I have been using the upvote entirely as a "SEEN" message. Kind of how I use likes on other services. I usually reply to comments, so a SEEN isn't really necessary, but at the same time sometimes I don't reply, making the SEEN more valuable. Now we could argue that none of the Hive portals inform you very well when comments are upvoted, making my efforts somewhat futile given that the person I'm upvoting may not see that upvote (they may not even see if I reply to the comment), but I think it's a good habit to have.
The reason I treated it this way is that any vote under 2 cents goes to dust. That is, you don't get paid. In effect, it disappears. My HP has never been high enough to give comment upvotes beyond this dust limit in the past, but now I'm getting close! I see at the current value of HIVE, if I upvote at 10% then I give a 2 cent upvote. Finally I can get past the dust limit!
So going forward I will be upvoting all good comments at 10%. You'll get a penny on the deal after the comment pays out in a week. Again, it's not much, but it's something, eh? Better than before. That will cut into my post curation a little, as those 10% upvotes add up, but I do want to give at least a tiny thanks to everyone who takes the time to leave me a comment.
I decided I will continue to power-up 20-50 everyday even though I am past my goal, so hopefully that upvote keeps climbing!
[By the way, that chart above that shows my upvote at certain percentages—if you want to see it for you, go here, replacing @dbooster with your Hive name.]

There is a swath of folks on hive who really are here to support others, to learn, to spread happiness and joy, while also supporting with money of sorts, however little it sometimes is. While earning is lovely, it is not our reason for being here. Perhaps we would be that way wherever we were, however rich we were.
20 cents is a huge upvote if you ask me! I imagine there are some who would scoff and not notice, but none of the folks I support would fail to see that you had upvoted their post.
wouldn't ten 10% upvotes earn you the same as one 100% upvote in most cases?
I wasn't really thinking about that, but we do earn curation on comments, don't we? So I guess it's win-win.
I agree, twenty cent is a huge curation and not one to scoff at.
I rarely upvote comments, I should do more of that as there's the knock in effect of better engagement
There's also the new commentrewarder thing you can use to boost your support for good comments
I need to look into that. I saw acid's first post talking about the idea, but I didn't have a chance to read the next yet.
If you're interested, here is a link to the announcement post: https://peakd.com/hive/@commentrewarder/introducing-commentrewarder-a-new-service-to-reward-comments
Thanks!
Thanks for the mention :)
I just like being in the habit of upvoting them even if my vote runs to dust, because eventually one day it won't.
Agreed. I think a lot of my votes go to dust based on what @dbooster stated. However, I want to show those engaging that I see and appreciate them.
Yeah, I agree, the habit is important to keep.
I upvote comments under my posts. It's a nice thing to do.
I agree!
I usually upvote good comments 100% 😅. I’ve been doing it all wrong 😂
Naw, I think you were right and I was wrong!
Speaking of which , I accidentally removed the extra few thousand HP I delegate myself from an alt account because I typed wrong number changing it and I gotta wait 2 more days before I can redo. So my vote is weaker than usual. Here’s a HSBI for a comment tip for ya!
That was my Nineties Friday pick! 😂
Eh let’s meet in middle! Instead of 100% or 10% maybe 25% or 50% for real good comments
!PIMP
Great song!
That is awesome, surpassing the dust limit. Sounds like an epic movie more than something in Hive. That's why I use dustbunny to not lose all those votes to dust (but I'm sure I still do.) But I always upvote comments because I think it's important to show support and gratitude. It will be fun to get past the dust limit myself one of these days!
Yeah I use the dust services for myself, but for others I just need to vote higher.
Congratulations! 35k is not small. It took time, effort, and also faith to reach that number :)
I like your reason for upvoting comments on your posts. I never thought it that way (as "SEEN") but it does deliver a message that you've read their comments. I usually upvote comments on my content as a sign of appreciation :)
Thanks! It took 7+ years, in fact.
Good to see someone is growing and enjoying it here on Hive. I have to admit the biggest fun is over, at least for me and at least for the moment. It might change some day in the future, so I am not leaving either. Talking about comment voting, I always upvote comments with 50%, that should be at least 3-4 cents depending on my voting power. So fortunately those votes won't be lost.
However, I am sure you are aware that there are other places which will reward you for writing and posting. Hive forked from one of them, and there was another fork later too. And some other web projects work in a similar way, so there are some other options to be fair.
Have a good weekend, I hope fall has reached your area already!
Yeah, you're right, there are a few other places. Sad to hear you don't get as much fun out of this place as you used to. It is too bad we've lost so many Japanese folks or folks in Japan, like Graham. Hope things get better for you, and glad to hear you will be staying!
It's still hot as hell here (in Aichi), but starting to get the faintest hints of autumn at night, so that is good.
Well, maybe it has been too long and too much to feel overly excited. Or maybe I just need some real change for a while. But I guess I am not the only one who feels like this, especially now when Hive is missing some real perspective. Anyways, not going to leave here, it already has become something like a hobby and a habit :)
nice, comments are very important as it is engagement....
Yeah, absolutely!
IMO, its a better way to get some engagement rather than spending HSBI giveaway.
Given that most people don't really understand HSBI, I completely agree.
Now that we have the API fixed (hopefully; it's responding to queries again, but it needs some time to catch up on missed data) I want to do another series on "What is Hive SBI and how does it work?"
But for the record, I'm also in the 'upvote meaningful comments and replies' camp, and I encourage people to get their upvote value above 0.02 before delegating to things. That can be hard with falling HIVE prices, though. My own is only 0.018 right now, but I use @dustbunny to bump my comment votes above dust level.
I think this is a nice initiative to acknowledge the reading of the post. Thanks for sharing.
Please doublecheck. Could be, that the dust treshold is rather 2.5c, so it would be a shame if all your 2c-votes are lost.
Oh no, I hope not! I was going off the 2 cent figure that that dustbunny service mentioned. If it's changed... well, guess I need to buy more Hive to power up even more.
I mean u should he good just making it 15% instead. I agree dust votes are pointless unless that’s all the HP someone has.
Yeah, maybe I should. I need to change my idea. Comments deserve good votes!
